This board is OK but some what misleading. I upgraded from 450 PII to be able to watch DVDs and prevent hesitation in the frames. YOu would think at 800mhz it will be able to play but this thing cant. Sandra benchmark puts it slightly better than 433 Celeron which is about what I experienced.. hesitation in the frames!! Memory performs better than P100 but that is about it. You can do basics but multimedia is inadequate.

This board works great on winXP, haven't tried it on redhat yet. I only had 1 problem...had to reinstall windows for it to work; not a big problem, most motherboards are the same way. I got the cpu to run at 800mhz, feels faster.

I got this motherboard when it was on sale with a BIG rebate. For the money it's great. It's not going to win any performance contests but it's stable and solid. I use Debian on it and everything works fine. Debian has all the drivers installed and working and it make a great $5 fileserver!

I bought this for my four-year-old son's computer and it works great with XP. Good for the Internet, simple gaming. Can't beat the price.

This is the first system I've build, it's great for beginner. I love it. Now I’ll invest some real money in my next PC

I installed this Syntax S635MP Motherboard/Cpu combo and love it! Of course this is not a 3 gighz Cpu! But it is a great deal for the money! I pulled a PII-425 mgtz board and installed this in its place. I re-installed all of the software that was previously on this hard drive. Windows 2000 OS. It is quick enough that my customer is well pleased with its performance. I had to replace the pc100 memory in the old system with PC2100 memory...256 megs. Together, this is a rock solid performer for this individual. I had absolutely no driver installation problems! I highly recommend this product!

EXCELLENT BOARD!!

REVIEW BY:  Reviewed  Apr 16, 2004
Good: Price, Runs cool, quiet, drivers work. Bad: Only adequate performance - CPU roughly equivalent to a PIII 600 MHz On the positive side, all of the drivers work for Windows 2000 Pro, and Mandrake 9.1 and RedHat 9.0 picked up on everything as well. Once again, for the price, a CPU and mobo that works and doesn't generate a bunch of heat and doesn't require noisy cooling fans is welcome, and I'm pleased. I put it in an Antec Minuet case, and I can't hear it. Case front USB and audio worked on first try too. However, don't expect a lot of horsepower from this combo. It's great for an Internet terminal/Linux box/file server. You aren't going to get much CPU intensive work done on it. It took 10 minutes for the Via C3 to unzip UT2K4 Dedicated server, my P4 3.25 GHz got it done in just over a minute. Also, Syntax's DDR system on this board is great.

Well I have just finished building the 5th combo and for the money it's the best around. They make a great Internet PC and workstation for any home or office. The only thing that I could find wrong about these boards are that they are 776mhz top speed even if you fool Bios and it says 1gig its really only 776mhz and that there is only 64kb L1 cache. Thank You guys for a great product and price even if there is a rebate or not great buy.

Very good board, I love the way you can customize the bios on this board and for $29 you just can't beat the price!

Appears to work great most of the time but suffers from intermittent crashes which took my database down with it! Unusable due to crashing problems.

I bought this board with the intention of using it as a backup PC. It starts out at 700mhz or so, and i cant seem to gee it any higher, even when tweaking the BIOS. Over all, its a nice little board, perfect for easy use, e-mail, Internet, work processing

REVIEW BY: Linux Reviewed  Mar 04, 2004
I bought this motherboard for use with Linux. I built a machine with 512 Mb RAM, a 200 Gb harddrive (overkill, I know, but I couldn't pass up that $50 rebate!), CD-ROM drive, CD-RW drive, and Mandrake Linux 9.2. I am please to say that this Linux distro was painless to install and was able to detect and configure everything on this motherboard except that strange CNR-port modem. Windows 95 (yes, 95...I'm not buying another MS license for anything!), on the other hand, cannot detect the on-board VGA and I can't get the drivers that I downloaded from SiS to work either. So that leaves me with just Linux, which is not bad. Overall I'm satisfied with this motherboard and the $5 after-rebate price was unbeatable. But I sure wouldn't have paid full price for it. If anybody can tell me how to over-clock the processor on this board, I'd appreciate it: djpalm64@yahoo.com

This board works even better than the Via Chipset (S452-1002) Syntax board I also purchased. It does not share RAM with the video for example. I played the DivX movies from Toms Hardware Guide with no problems. The drivers also installed more easily than the Via chipset board (which I had to manually install the modem). Stuck the CD in the drive and everything was setup! Both boards run at 800 MHz (check out this link http://www.syntaxusa.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=44_48&products_id=108 for the specs). You can run the Toms Hardware Guide CPU speed utility (on that site) to confirm that the clock speed is indeed 800 MHz (see also the Via site if you want). It's true that it won't encode/decode MP3s, DivX at blazing speed as the FPU is clocked at half speed (400 MHz), but there is no way that a K62 200 MHz will outperform the Samuel2 chip! Also, the Via Samuel2 only uses 12 Watts, so no worries about a burnt out CPU!

I bought this on a trial basis to see how good it would work. It's not the fastest process but for the money its a great deal. I bought an inexpensive case for Tiger, added memory, hard drive, a cd and cdrw and Windows XP and worked great.

How can you go wrong ??? Runs LINUX great with Mandrake 9.2. The product is great.

REVIEW BY:  Reviewed  Feb 18, 2004
Not running at 1.3 GHz. Initially with the default BIOS settings the board/processor was only running at 800 MHz. By playing with the BIOS I've upped the MHz to 1GHz. Benchmark scores are very low...but in reality the machine actually runs fairly well. Feels just as fast as my 700 MHz Duron (SiS730 chipset, Matsonic MS8308EP). ..for non-gaming...my 700 MHz Duron system feels almost as fast as my XP3000+ system. The Syntax 635MP is coupled with a 40 GB 7200 rpm WDC, and Kingston value ram 512 MB PC2700 dimm. I'd get 10 more of these S635MP boards/cpu combos if the rebates would be valid for ten more.

I bought this motherboard along with a miniATX case with the intentions of using it as a cheap but semi-decent HTPC solution. Coupled with 256mb DDR, this system cannot even play DIVX movies. MPEG videos perform fine. I ran SiSoft CPU benchmarks and in both cases, this VIA C3 1.3GHz processor was outperformed by an AMD k6 200MHz. I knew these processors were not stellar performers...but losing to an AMD K6-200MHZ???? The AMDk6 processors have just as worthless FPU arithmetic. The VIA C3's inability to decode DIVX movies immediatly killed my intentions of using this for a HTPC solution. In fact, I dont even think that this motherboard is worth the $5.00(AR) I paid for it. So now, it is going to be a linux file server. I HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS MOTHERBOARD!!!!
