This doesn't seem to last very long.

I've had this for 6months. This specific external drive gave me errors and also caused other problems. I do not feel I can trust it enough to even use it for a backup. HDDscan says it has errors. It also seems to lockup for no reason and stop responding. I believe this is due to the design of the parts inside. I am not happy that I spent money on this only for it to last about 6months.

The Western Digital (WD) Company stands behind their products. I always buy WD products when I can due to their customer support. I took this drive out of the box plugged it in and it has been working great ever since that day. It was the same with the other three I bought from WD.

Good value

I bought this drive to serve as a backup for my Linux CentOS 5.4 system (which I am a new user of). I tried just about everything to get it to mount properly to the Linux system but it turns out to be an issue with the drive size (3TB). So I will use this to backup my Windows XP computer and will use the 1TB seagate ExtHDD from that computer to backup the Linux. Otherwise the drive is working great. I find the backup software to be very limited in functionality, curently it is automatically backing up very many files that I don't care about only because I cannot specify certain files to backup. Also backups happen continuously whenever you save a file, so the drive is more or less running constantly. Also could not set it to automatically back-up a network drive, only files saved on the main hard disk.

Works as expected

Plugged in and installed WD smartware. Still don't understand why I see WD services running over the Network, but will figure that out. My review might be a little biased, I need to do some research and figure out how everything works. Before I re-imaged my PC, it hogged a lot system resources. Dont like that fact that has to be on all the time, I want the drive to work less so that it is more reliable (last longer for when you really need a backup). I thought the power switch would allow for it to be turned off but seems like it never ejects as program are running. The software IMHO should handle this request and stop the disc and then turn it off. I have unplugged the power prior to booting up, but then all the WD software service keep on looking for the drive that slows the system. Speed wise, it is great.

Works extremely well

Great Product for my present use, however Windows all the way to windows 7 cannot properly read the data off drives bigger than 2.5 TB. To resolve the issue you need to have Windows 8 which was built for large hard disk support.

Value but avg otherwise

Everyone loves it and for the price its indeed v good value, hence a 5. Using other backup software (SD), it took 11 hrs for 750 GB on a new i5 Mac (never went to sleep by the way). Features are minimal, one input only but I didn't use the SW or the USB 3.0 which others like. Quality also a 3 , perhaps a 4, based on it being only plastic and an iffy jack. Sorry can't get higher than a 3 for Performance either due to so-so transfer speed (148 Mbps, no where near 480) for USB 2.0 unless this was due to SD alone. I assume many others are still using USB 2.0. Set up was flawless on the Mac but be sure to pre-save the 3 Mac files before reformatting. If this low footprint virtually silent HD is well built I look forward to many years of manual parallel backups to safeguard my extensive media files. Good luck with your purchase.

Performance is sweet

First USB 3.0 drive & so far, I'm impressed. Auto-backups are working great & access is fast.
