Production is good

The product is interesting, though it can sometimes be difficult to have remote access to our data stored on disk. Also, when the disc is protected by a password to open files become longer because the computer asks us to enter the password ... It must also have a wireless connection for fast transfer of large files ... Otherwise it is an excellent product!

Disappointed

I bought this device Aug 2011. The set up was a breeze and with in 15 minutes we were up and running. Then, disappointment. I had to move my desk which entailed moving the device. I shut the power off, disconnected, reset up my office, connected all devices. When the device started I began to see a flashing green light and the device was not being recognized by the dashboard nor did the network recognize the device. After trying a number of things recommended on the community link, I contacted WD trouble shooting. We tried everything and it was the technician's best guess that the device had failed. Luckily, I had a copy of my photos and most of the documents on the device are also sync'd with a web based program. I believe I have saved most everything. I also bought a warranty. We will see how this the exchange goes... Hopefully the next device I will have better luck with!

Excellent Purchase

I have over 500 DVD's in my library. Was getting to the point of running out of room. I decided to start ripping a copy on my PC and came across this network drive with a built in media server. Best purchase I have ever made. I move the ripped movies over to the network device and play them through my PS3. The PS3 detects the media server right away. My only regret.... Not buying the 2TB!

WD HD 1TB Failed after 8 mo.

I purchased a WD 1TB Mybook (not one pictured above) to use to store all my music, videos and photo's on. After 8 months of use, it died on me. I called WD and they said they would replace it.

OK for what it is

If you simply want to store and share media to your computers and game systems this will work for that just fine. It does require proprietary software to run on one of your networked computers. The dashboard shortcut does not work via host name, but you can access the dashboard via IP address through a web browser. The backup software provided is terrible. It refused to load and then the part that did install could not be uninstalled. Stick to using the backup features provided by your OS. The remote access they are bragging on is only a free 30 day trial through Mionet or by opening up an FTP port on your router (not so secure). Creating user accounts and shares has to be done through the software and is made a lot more complicated then it really needs to be. Moral of the story, for public share of pics and games it does the job for the price.
