No Shortage of Bad Guys
Scene: Battle of Stalingrad. Two totalitarian states are killing each other's citizens. The Russians are sending raw recruits against the German Wehrmacht as cannon and machine gun fodder. Only 1 in 3 has a rifle; if you don't, you're supposed to use the one from a deadman. If you retreat, you'll be shot by your own NKVD political officers. Vasily Zeitzev is a natural sniper and begins to cause havoc on the invading Germans. The Germans learn of Zeitzev (thanks to political propaganda) and send their best sniper, Major Koning from their sniper school, to kill the Russian. A very deadly cat and mouse game ensues in the rubble of the devastated city on the Volga. This is a brutal movie. There are moments of compassion, but the viewer gets absorbed into the brutality that was Stalingrad.
