Simple to use but doesnt perform

This item was really simple to setup and use. The lcd preview screen is really nice without having to setup a tv or monitor. The available features are simple but really about all you'll need. All in all I was very pleased with the unit on first use. But my real problem with this unit is performance. I have a professional version vcr and wanted to put my current tapes on disc. Recording is so simple a child can do it but when I played back the final videos on DVD I found the picture would go for a while then noticed it would freeze. It would do so for a few seconds then play, back and forth. Making the video really annoying to watch from the resulting recorded DVD. It would start doing this near the middle of each disc I made. I guess the unit doesnt have enough memory to handle the video processing on the fly and the sad part I was on the lowest recording setting so it should have done well. Cant recommend this product.

This thing is GREAT!!

I bought this as a Christmas Present to myself and my 12 year old son thinking that I would have to show him how to use it to record his show. HE wound up showing me how to use it. It was so simple, he set it up and has been burning shows straight from our Comcast DVR. Simple to use, great quality. The ONLY thing missing is that I have not been able to capture the Closed Caption Feed from the signal. (For familys that use Closed Captions for hearing impared, I am certain there IS a way to add this feature, we just have not found it yet. ) Also, the unit could use a remote control to hit the pause button while we are trying to edit out commerials from our recordings. Other than that, it's easy peasy and we are very happy with our purchase!

Good when it works

I purchased one of these and was very pleased as it is simple and works well--for awhile. I am now waiting for my 4th recorder in less than a year as the other 3 have had issues and stopped working. The 3rd replacement didn't work at all. When it works it's great but I am not having much luck getting a unit that works for more than a couple of months if that. Good luck.

Could not be happier

This is one of the best electronic items I have bought in years. Over the last several years, I have tried so many different products for getting my old movies onto DVDs, all of which included either a television set or a computer, complicated hook-ups, and a whole host of problems, including the DVDs ultimately not being watchable by the people I gave them to as gifts. Hundreds of hours of my time down the drain. This product eliminates the middleman of a computer or TV, and is so simple to use. I do have a Sony camcorder, so did not experience any of the compatibility issues other users have mentioned.

Excellent!

This product works excellent as opposed to the older model that Sony put out a few years ago. This model works like a charm. Not sure why the fellow below said that they only work with Sony compatible products, that is not true. I have a Canon 8mm and DV camcorder and both work great with this product.

Nice product

I love this great for transfering old VCR tapes and making more room for storage easy to use for photographs too. Worked with everything that I tried including Cannon Camera and old JVC camcorder.

Frustrating

Recorder did a decent job with Sony camera but had a slot for the memory card my Canon camera uses and it wouldn't recognize it. Found out after the fact that all recorders like this are very proprietary. Sony, JVC, Panasonic & Canon all have recorders that work only with their cameras. This needs to be emphasized to all perspective customers.

Simple to use

Have used it to make copies of Hi8 tapes. It is a good buy with easy to follow instructions. I haven't tried VHS, yet.

Useless

This thing you can use only with Sony products.So if you have for example canon camera It will not work with it.I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Works great

I am using this to burn dvd's of my old 8mm video tapes. Camcorder hooks up via composite input and the Sony unit records like a champ. If the camera outputs static, the dvd burner pauses until video returns. It is compact, and easy to use. Great for archives.
