Had the D5000 for about three weeks and taken over 1000 photos. I find it a great D-SLR for the money.
This is my 1st D-SLR although I have used SLR cameras for several years and digital cameras for about 7yrs. There is still a learning curve when switching to D-SLRs. The D5000 has many features that will take time to learn, but there is still auto and scene modes that are very easy to use.
All in all it is everything I expected and the whole purchase and delivery experience was very good.

Yes. it is still new to me. I've had it one week and taken almost 1000 pics already. But the performance is outstanding. I have over 30 years of semi pro photographic experience. This camera is easy to use and takes great pics. I'm still learning the features. The lens could use and upgrade but it still does the job well. My only complaint is in the use in very low light, the autofocus is slow. You'll need to add a good flash. I recommend a 2nd lens. I got the 55-200 This combo mean I can do everything from closeup to sports. The variable angle monitor works well. I did not think I would like it at first but find it very handy. Ilike that I can stow it and protect it. On the camera, navigating the menus is a little difficult but you get the hang of it. It's more time consuming to change from photo to movie mode. This camera is not as heavy duty as the D90 but still well built....and lighter. The pics are indistinguishable from a D90. GREAT CAMERA!!!!

MEGAPIXELS AND PHOTO PRINT SIZE
The
photo print quality of your images depends on the camera's "megapixel
rating." The higher number of pixels your camera has, the higher the resolution
(or sharpness) of your images---and the larger your prints can be without
quality loss.
Digital Camera Flash Storage
Capacities
* Average file size
using cameras highest resolution JPEG mode. Actual number of
photos, songs, and minutes will vary depending on camera/device model,
format resolution and compression, usable capacity, and bundled software.
Actual usable memory capacity may vary. 1MB equals 1 million bytes; 1GB
equals 1 billion bytes.
NUMBER OF IMAGES STORED ON A DIGITAL CARD The number of
pictures you can take varies depending on your camera model and complexity
of the scene being photographed. To calculate how many pictures your card
can hold, divide the capacity of your card by the average file size of your
images. For example, if you have a 256MB card, and use a camera that has an
average file size of 1.2MB, then 256 divided by 1.2 gives you approximately
213 pictures. As you change modes on your camera, the number of images will
increase if you shoot in a lower resolution mode, and decrease if you shoot
in a higher resolution mode.
