Be very careful that this is not your only backup

Shoppers should be aware the Western Digital hardware fails just like everything else. If you are storing files on a My Book Live, do not be lulled into a sense of security. I made the mistake of not immediately backing up my data. My WD MBL failed three months after purchase To add insult to injury, WD does NOT provide support to recovers. I have had quotes from WD-approved providers starting at $800 - $3500. Think about that when buying NAS (e.g. RAID). Is it really worth saving $200? WD is not better than the rest. Protect your data and spend the money for RAID. Do not touch My Book Live. You get what you pay for.

This disk works just as I expected it to. It is always connected to my system and is always on so I can write to anytime. My only concern whe I rered it was whether it world include a USB 3.0 cable, it did. I do not know anything about the included software, I purchased it for data storage only and it works great for that.

the previous review is nonsense

First of all, i've had about 7 external hard drives in the past 10 years and right now i use this model, a 3TB WD just like this but smaller, and a 2TB WD on 3 different computers. I wouldn't buy anything but a Western Digital hard drive personally. I'm amazed that someone can't get this to work for 3 days. You plug it in the USB, it's discovered, and it works. Period. Ideally it is not supposed to be plugged in all the time (all hard drives have a shelf life) - but even if it is, it works fine. My guess is the previous reviewer has other problems going on with his computer. To show you how easy it is to use, i bought one for my 70 year old father who has been on a computer all of 3 months and is clueless about technology. He uses an old computer he got with Vista on it - it's old. It took him 3 minutes to get this up and running. So take the previous review with a grain of salt.

dissapointed in purchase

I would not recommend this drive since I can't get it to work now for three day's. It is supposed to be left plugged into your PC and turn on when your computer turns on, problem is, the computer won't turn on with it attached. If you need encrypted backup and are a computer guru, maybe a good deal. But for a simple external drive, don't bother! More trouble than it is worth, unless you can disable a SES driver in BIOS???
