You need to read the fine print. They only work if you can see the other person holding it. They work on line of site only. The ones I bought had an outdoor range of 1/4 mile. I called Cobra and they told me a tree or house would block the signal and indeed it did.

These units are relatively inexpensive but work well for close range. The settings are a bit cumbersome to change. The battery indicator does not indicate amount of charge remaining, rather it lights when batteries are low, so you don't know battery level. We had a bit of problem with the charger.
