Fan's are too small and stop working
The fans on these StarTech enclosures stop working after about 1 years time. They are too small, and embedded into the device in such a way as to be painful to replace, and overall, just don't move enough air for active drives. I used these enclosures for building a Solaris ZFS based server for home storage. The ZFS scrub runs for an extended period of time, and the drives just get too warm with these small fans. Look at other choices. The icy dock line seems to be the better choice based on fan size and accessibility for replacement. There are trayless and tray versions.

Great investmont
This is one of the best ways to add SATA HDD to your computer in the least space. quick and easy install. clean look in side and out of your case. not a bunch of wires all tangled up. You can swap HDD with out tools of having to open your case. great for having back ups you don't want to store in your case. Solid construction. The only down fall is the way the fan is wired in. You have to use the cables provided to have the fan work. With one or two drives in here with space in between you are fine with out the fan. add all three drives and you have heat issues if the fan is not on. I wired the fans in seperately so that I did not have to use there wires. this would also take out the lights on the front not useing there wires. there is a jumper from there power wire to a seperate input on the back that powers the fan and lights on the front. Overall I love this cage. I have had mine for more than 2 years.

Very nice rack. Eonomical size. Quality construction. This moves lots of air. Very Quiet. Keeps 2 SATA drives cool to the touch. Takes up way less space than the 2 Plastic Noisey IDE racks it replaces. Very nice. Worth the $99- I paid for it.
