Garmin nuvi 855 GPS Navigation
Stay ahead of the curve with nüvi 855. This premium navigator features voice-activated navigation and lane assist with junction view. Now you can keep both hands on the wheel, tell nüvi where to go and maneuver complicated interchanges with ease. Like the rest of the 805-series, it comes with a widescreen display, preloaded maps and more.
Speak Commands
nüvi 855 not only tells you where to turn but listens to your spoken commands. With nüvi’s innovative speech recognition, you safely control nüvi’s interface with your voice — allowing you to keep both hands on the wheel. Simply press the button on the remote (which attaches to the steering wheel) to activate speech recognition and begin speaking menu options. nüvi even recognizes shortcut phrases for popular functions. Tell nüvi "Find Address" and speak an address to start navigating.
Know the Lane Before It’s Too Late
No more guessing which lane you need to be in to make an upcoming turn. Lane assist with junction view guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. It realistically displays road signs and junctions on your route along with arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.
With nüvi 855's widescreen display, you'll always get the big picture. View map detail, driving directions, photos and more in bright, brilliant color. Its sunlight-readable, 4.3-inch display is easy to read — from any direction.
Get Turn-by-Turn Directions
nüvi 855's intuitive interface greets you with two simple questions: "Where to?" and "View map." Speak a menu option or touch the color screen to easily look up addresses and services and get voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that speak street names to your destination. It comes preloaded with detailed City Navigator® NT street maps, nearly 6 million points of interest (POIs) and features digital elevation maps that give you a big picture of the surrounding terrain. You can also upload custom points of interest (POIs). And with HotFix™ satellite prediction, nüvi calculates your position faster to get you there quicker.
Find Yourself, Your Car
Keep track of yourself and your car with nüvi 855. Just speak or tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. nüvi 855 even remembers where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.
Plan Ahead
nüvi 855 includes advanced navigational features to take the worry out of traveling. With route planning you can save 10 routes, specify via points and preview simulated turns on the 855's wide screen. In addition, nüvi 855 automatically sorts multiple destinations to provide an efficient route for errands, deliveries or sales calls. It also displays speed limits for highways and Interstates. A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.
Take It With You
Like the rest of the nüvi 805-series, nüvi 855 sports a sleek, slim design and fits comfortably in your pocket or purse. Its rechargeable lithium-ion battery makes it convenient for navigation by car or foot.
Go Beyond Navigation
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 855 includes many “must have” entertainment and travel tools including MP3 player, audio book player (subscription to Audible.com required), JPEG picture viewer, currency converters, Garmin Games, alarm clock and more. This is an excellent GPS. I have read many reviews on this and other units and the biggest cmmplaint was the timing of the announcement of a turn or exit. Not this unit, plenty of advance notice. It's accurracy is impressive in comparison. I diliberately would try to confuse it but didn't succeed. (i did confuse a friends unit once ... that was funny). There are a couple of features that would have been a great compliment to this ... but that might be upgradable through firmware. Did all the updates first before using this. Great product.

I love my new Garmin. It works great in big cities where multiple lanes and ramps can get tricky. Only problem is that you cannot turn it off. You need to pull the battery if you want to keep it charged between trips. It also does not come with an AC adapter so if you don't pull the battery and it is dead, you have to take it out to your car to plan your trip. No thrilled with that since I use my computer to assist me with addresses and downloads.

GPS Terms You Should
Know!
GPS - Global Positioning System (Device) - Is a device that works
with the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) developed by the US
Dept. of Defense. It is the only fully functional GNSS in the world,
and uses a constellation of between 24 and 32 Medium Earth Orbit
satellites that transmit precise signals allowing GPS receivers to
determine their current location, the exact time, and their velocity.
Also known as a Personal Navigation Device, Navigational System, GPS Receiver,
or GPS Navigator.
System - The GPS Device itself.
Navigation - Is the process of
locating your current position, establishing your destination, and
controlling the direction and movement of a vehicle from one place to
another.
Compass - A device or feature of a GPS receiver
that shows your current direction.
Map - A map (or chart)
is a visual representation of an area, showing different objects or
landmarks; such as: streets, buildings, locations, and points of
interest.
Trip - A trip is the travel from point A to
point B.
Point of Interest - A POI is a recorded
location within the GPS Device, either pre-defined, or that can be
end-user entered. Usually these are accessed to speed setting a
destination, or a detour.
Trilateration - This is how a GPS device knows its
location. It uses three GPS satellites to trilaterate its
position. GPS units operate on a common clocking system to use
the variation in radio-frequency signal arrival time to calculate
their position.
Automotive GPS - A GPS Receiver typically
used in a car or truck. Depending on the design, can also be
used on motorcycles, boats, or as a hand-held GPS, but is not designed
specifically for these uses.
Mounting - Dash or dashboard mounting usually involves a suction mount holder,
that can easily be removed for storage when not needed.
Traffic - Traffic can be: the
display or information provide about real-time traffic conditions;
about historic traffic conditions at different times of day; or the
ability to route around typical congestion points on your Trip or
route.
Voice - Voice features can be: spoken
information that the GPS provides, including spoken directions, street
names, or alerts; or can be voice commands that the GPS owner gives to
the GPS device.
Touch Screen - A covering over the GPS
display allowing control of the features or map of the GPS Device.
Bluetooth - This is a wireless technology allowing
different devices to communicate. In GPS systems, Bluetooth
usually allows the GPS device to act as a hands-free speaker phone.
Geotagging - This is the saving of a
GPS coordinate to other information, such as a photo, point of
interest or other location. Using a GPS you can usually obtain
exact coordinates that may be used with other devices, or other
devices, such as a Digital Camera may have GOS built in for that
purpose.
GPS Vehicle Placement! NOTICE TO DRIVERS IN CALIFORNIA AND MINNESOTA:
State law prohibits drivers in California and Minnesota from using
suction mounts on their windshields while operating motor vehicles. But you can
easily use other GPS dashboard or friction mounting options. Consult your
GPS manual for more information.
GPS units are designed to provide you with
route suggestions. Unless a GPS unit contains a traffic receiver, they do not
reflect road closures or road conditions, traffic congestion, weather
conditions, or other factors that may affect safety or timing while driving.
Use the unit only as a navigational aid. Do not attempt to use the unit for any
purpose requiring precise measurement of direction, distance, location, or
topography. This product should not be used to determine ground proximity for
aircraft navigation. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated by
the United States government, which is solely responsible for its accuracy and
maintenance. The government’s system is subject to changes which could affect
the accuracy and performance of all GPS equipment, including the unit. Although
