If you're lost, use the Where Am I? emergency locator to view your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and fuel stations.
Navigate Off-Road
Conveniently plug in optional maps on preloaded microSD™ cards for all your off-road adventures (see Maps tab for compatible maps). Add topographic maps to explore the backcountry or load BlueChart® g2 Vision and Inland Lakes Vision marine maps for a great day on the water. The card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you don't have to worry about getting it wet. With its high-sensitivity GPS receiver and HotFix™ satellite prediction, nüvi 550 locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover, deep canyons and near tall building and trees.
Expand Your GPS
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 550 includes many travel tools, including world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. Show off photos of your excursions with nüvi's picture viewer. Even download geocaches and instructions from Geocaching.com straight to your unit. It also supports optional FM traffic alerts or optional MSN® Direct content. The 550 features Garmin Lock™, an anti-theft feature, and is compatible with our free Garmin Garage, where you can download custom vehicles that show your location on the map.

I used a new 550 on a bike trip through the Pyrenees this fall and relied on it to find the way. It did have a number of the hotels I stayed at and really helped in the little towns with winding streets.
You have to turn down the illumination to 50% to get just 4 hours of battery life. I was running at 30% to be able to get 6 hours of usage per day. Buy a second battery and make sure it is charged.
I have to give this GPS a 5 for value in comparison to a Motorcycle specific Zumo at over twice the price. The rest of the features are adequate or better. Garmin quality will insure years of trouble free service. I've had many GPS's of different brands so this I'm sure of.
Not a steal by any means as far as what I pauid from Tiger but it was fair and arrived promptly

I got this after having a Tom Tom. I wanted a GPS that had a few more features but was still in a cost-effective range.
So far, I can't say that it has found places more than getting me lost or sidetracked. I have downloaded the new software and have the attachment that detects traffic problems.
The voice options work well. The problems are several that are important: I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, so this is a large city area. The GPS can't find some streets that are 2-3 years old. New expressways are not listed. I went to Austin and it didn't "find" that I was on a major expressway that had been up for 4 years. It showed that I was in a field. Sometimes when I come home or go across the metroplex, it will tell me to get off. Imagine my surprise when it takes me off and then tells me to get back on the highway. I have then lost valuable time. It gets me lost frequently and cannot find spellings of addresses.
I bought this a few weeks ago for my Motorcycle, just in case I need to find my way somewhere. It's performance has been flawless once I downloaded and installed the free map update from Garmin. I like the database of points of interest, very functional and very quick. The ability to set multiple destinations at one time is also a very nice feature. This unit is also considered waterproof, so very nice for a motorcycle.

Although this Garmin 550 GPS is helpful, I find that having to download new maps every year is costly. I did not update my GPS this year and the unit makes errors. It tells me to make lefts when there are no streets to go into and to make emmediate U turns when it's illegal to make U turns in most of the the main roads in NY. Also I had to replace the car charger for pieces of the male prong got stuck into my car charger and it cost me quite a bit to fix that problem. Lastly I wrote to Garmin about the incident and they ignored my letter.

GPS Terms You Should
Know!
GPS - Global Positioning System (Device) - Is a device that works
with the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) developed by the US
Dept. of Defense. It is the only fully functional GNSS in the world,
and uses a constellation of between 24 and 32 Medium Earth Orbit
satellites that transmit precise signals allowing GPS receivers to
determine their current location, the exact time, and their velocity.
Also known as a Personal Navigation Device, Navigational System, GPS Receiver,
or GPS Navigator.
System - The GPS Device itself.
Navigation - Is the process of
locating your current position, establishing your destination, and
controlling the direction and movement of a vehicle from one place to
another.
Compass - A device or feature of a GPS receiver
that shows your current direction.
Map - A map (or chart)
is a visual representation of an area, showing different objects or
landmarks; such as: streets, buildings, locations, and points of
interest.
Trip - A trip is the travel from point A to
point B.
Point of Interest - A POI is a recorded
location within the GPS Device, either pre-defined, or that can be
end-user entered. Usually these are accessed to speed setting a
destination, or a detour.
Trilateration - This is how a GPS device knows its
location. It uses three GPS satellites to trilaterate its
position. GPS units operate on a common clocking system to use
the variation in radio-frequency signal arrival time to calculate
their position.
Automotive GPS - A GPS Receiver typically
used in a car or truck. Depending on the design, can also be
used on motorcycles, boats, or as a hand-held GPS, but is not designed
specifically for these uses.
Mounting - Dash or dashboard mounting usually involves a suction mount holder,
that can easily be removed for storage when not needed.

Bluetooth - This is a wireless technology allowing
different devices to communicate. In GPS systems, Bluetooth
usually allows the GPS device to act as a hands-free speaker phone.
Geotagging - This is the saving of a
GPS coordinate to other information, such as a photo, point of
interest or other location. Using a GPS you can usually obtain
exact coordinates that may be used with other devices, or other
devices, such as a Digital Camera may have GOS built in for that
purpose.
GPS Vehicle Placement! NOTICE TO DRIVERS IN CALIFORNIA AND MINNESOTA:
State law prohibits drivers in California and Minnesota from using
suction mounts on their windshields while operating motor vehicles. But you can
easily use other GPS dashboard or friction mounting options. Consult your
