Purchased this camera after a bit of research on the Internet, and am highly pleased with the purchase. I've shot a number of shots in various environments, and it's delivered every time! I've done quite a bit of experimenting with it to learn it, and feel it's really packed with features AND quality image production. I've used auto mode a but, but prefer to work in manual mode and the other availabe modes. You can do a lot in manual mode and really get some swift images!
I also purchased a Speedlite 270EX to use with it, and it makes a GREAT pair. Even better indoor images with a bounce flash!
Highly recommend this camera to a first time DSLR user looking for an upgrade to point and shoot image quality. Canon just makes a great product.
Love it

I did a lot of research before buying this camera. The price was great (they were offering 15% Bing cashback at the time) and this store is an official Canon dealer, meaning your 1 year manufacturer warranty will be upheld. Theydelivered my camera two days earlier than the anticipated delivery date.
As far as the camera goes, it's awesome. I had a Canon Powershot G9 before this one and the pictures on the XS just blow it away. At ISO 1600 on the XS it still looks better than the G9 at iso 400, even though I lost two megapixels by switching to the XS. Of course you should expect better low light performance from a DSLR, since it has a larger sensor than compacts.
You can still go full auto (or use P mode) but it has all the manual features you would expect from a DSLR. I still haven't messed with a lot of the advanced features, but this camera has a lot of capability to help you learn how to shoot better pictures.

MEGAPIXELS AND PHOTO PRINT SIZE
The
photo print quality of your images depends on the camera's "megapixel
rating." The higher number of pixels your camera has, the higher the resolution
(or sharpness) of your images---and the larger your prints can be without
quality loss.
Digital Camera Flash Storage
Capacities
* Average file size
using cameras highest resolution JPEG mode. Actual number of
photos, songs, and minutes will vary depending on camera/device model,
format resolution and compression, usable capacity, and bundled software.
Actual usable memory capacity may vary. 1MB equals 1 million bytes; 1GB
equals 1 billion bytes.
NUMBER OF IMAGES STORED ON A DIGITAL CARD The number of
pictures you can take varies depending on your camera model and complexity
of the scene being photographed. To calculate how many pictures your card
can hold, divide the capacity of your card by the average file size of your
images. For example, if you have a 256MB card, and use a camera that has an
average file size of 1.2MB, then 256 divided by 1.2 gives you approximately
213 pictures. As you change modes on your camera, the number of images will
increase if you shoot in a lower resolution mode, and decrease if you shoot
in a higher resolution mode.
Contents of package may vary from those pictured and stated here,
due to changes in manufacturer's specifications or merchandising.
