Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 Processor EU80569XL088NL
The Intel® Core™2 Extreme processor is the world’s first quadcore desktop processor, delivering the latest in cutting-edge processor technology and unprecedented performance across a wide range of applications and benchmarks. The new Intel Core 2 Extreme processors QX9000 series are based on the industry-leading 45nm manufacturing technology, providing another giant leap forward on the road to multi-core and parallel computing.

45nm manufacturing technology enables even more processor performance by doubling the transistor density, improving efficiency and speed relative to the previous generation, and increasing cache size by up to 50 percent. These new Intel Core 2 Extreme processors deliver more performance without using more energy.

Multitasking Monster
The Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core processor is a multitasking monster, so users can do more in less time. Significant improvements in system responsiveness are possible because certain tasks can be off-loaded to specific cores. Users can now take on several tasks at once, such as rendering a video, playing a game, or working on basic productivity software, because additional processor resources are free to handle other tasks.

Detailed Features

Features

  • Quad-Core Processing
Provides four independent execution cores in a single processor package. Four dedicated processing threads help operating systems and applications deliver additional performance, so end users can experience better multitasking and multi-threaded performance across many types of applications and workloads.
  • Chipset Support
Intel® Express Chipsets offer an array of exciting capabilities including dual graphics and deliver an impressive level of performance for demanding users. Other third-party chipsets may support Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processors; contact your board manufacturer for compatibility.
  • Intel® Wide Dynamic Execution
Improves execution speed and efficiency, delivering more instructions per clock cycle. Each core can complete up to four full instructions simultaneously.
  • Intel® Smart Memory Acces
Optimizes the use of the data bandwidth from the memory subsystem to accelerate out-of-order execution. A prediction mechanism reduces the time in-flight instructions have to wait for data. Pre-fetch algorithms move data from system memory into fast L2 cache in advance of execution. These functions keep the pipeline full, improving instruction throughput and performance. 45nm versions further improve this feature, with more efficient methods of loading and storing data in main memory.
  • Intel® Advanced Smart Cache
Dynamically allocates the shared L2 cache to each processor core based on workload. This efficient, dual-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from fast L2 cache, significantly reducing latency to frequently used data and improving performance.
  • Intel® HD Boost
Accelerates the execution of Streaming SIMD Extension (SSE) instructions to significantly improve the performance on a broad range of multimedia and compute intensive applications. The 128-bit SSE instructions are now issued at a throughput rate of one per clock cycle, effectively doubling their speed of execution on a per-clock basis over previous generation processors. 45nm versions include a new Super Shuffle Engine which improves existing SSE instructions while enabling significant gains on the latest SSE4 instruction set. SSE4-optimized applications, such as video editing and encoding in high-definition resolution, will see additional performance improvements.
  • Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT)
Allows one hardware platform to function as multiple “virtual” platforms. Intel VT improves manageability, limits downtime, and maintains worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions.
  • Intel® 64 Architecture
Allows the processor to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel 64 architecture can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory.
  • Execute Disable Bit
Provides enhanced virus protection when deployed with a supported operating system and prevents the code from infecting the system. Memory can be marked as executable or non-executable, allowing the processor to raise an error to the operating system if malicious code attempts to run in non-executable memory.

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 Processor
Big Things Do Come in Small Packages
Reviewed By Our Editors

The Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 Processor excels in multitasking. Running several tasks simultaneously will no longer be a burden for the user of this processor: specific cores take care of particular (probably basic) tasks, thus freeing up other cores and speeding up operations. Four independent cores (hence the term quad-core) working in sync certainly speed up applications; each core can run up to four instructions at the same time.

This series in particular banks on the 45nm manufacturing technology. Simply put, this doubles the density of the transistor and gives the cache fifty per cent more in size (an L2 shared cache expands to 12MB). It promises a lot more with less energy consumption.
Smart Memory Access makes sure that data is stored and accessed efficiently, reducing the probability of having idle or empty pipelines. The Intel 64 architecture gives the processor access to a larger chunk of memory. To extend physical and virtual memory, all that's needed is 64-bit software and hardware.

Its Express Chipsets improve graphics. Multimedia applications can be harnessed using the Intel HD boost. With the aid of the SSE (Streaming SIMD Extension), corresponding instructions can now be dispensed at one per clock cycle, double that of previous processors from a different age. The Super Shuffle Engine 4 will give operations in high-def resolution and video editing that much needed boost.
Compartmentalization of platforms can be done using the Intel Virtualization Technology, the creation of multiple virtual platforms. Activities of a computational nature are separated, making the operations less cluttered, manageable and productive.
For those paranoid about new viruses cropping up at the most unexpected moments, the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 Processor has a pre-emptive mechanism. It prevents the virus code from seeping into the system. Should a code decide to infest non-executable memory, the processor can mark memory as either executable or non-executable.

Small but amazing, it is. It's got all the bases covered – from graphics improvement to system efficiency to virus protection.  So if you have to ability to add this to your new barebones project, or to upgrade your existing system, you should definitively consider this processor.

This thing is a god! I use this computer as a server/gaming computer. It runs everything with no problem! And to gamerdude: did you ever think of stickin a fan onto this?... Would have saved you a load of money. And Like everyone else says. Its not intel's fault. Its your fault that you disabled the auto-shutdown if temp gets too high and your fault that you didn't put in a fan on a quad core....

Comments from gamerdude reflect that he obviously violated the conditions of Intel's warantee; otherwise he would have been reimbursed for damages to his computer and a refund for your CPU. Therefore comments from gamerdude should be removed from the review permanently and immediately. P.J. Busche SSgt, USMC retired

their's a reason i call bs on gamerdude 1: if he moded his m/b to take off the auto shut down for high temps that's his fault 2: the auto shut down checks for high spike in temps and shuts off pc before damage. it is in all m/b after like 2005.

I don't dwn this processor atm but I'm sure its fast. This is the third response to Gamerdude. Did you ever think to put in a heatsink and fan on the top of the processor? If I bought this proc., I would probabely recommend a liquid cooling fan, just because of the sheer heat.

This is another response to Gamerdude's review. I have this processor and it ROCKS. Screaming fast. Gamerdude: If it melted because you ''just stuck it in there'', well, that's Darwin at work for you! I would have charged you just for wasting a good processor through stupidity.

What You Should Know

Heat Sinks - Many Shapes & Sizes!
A heat sink (or heatsink) is an object that absorbs and dissipates heat from another object using thermal contact (either direct or radiant). Heat sinks are used in a wide range of applications wherever efficient heat dissipation is required; including for CPUs, Memory, Video Cards, and more.

Heat Sink Shapes Change!
Many products come with a Heat Sink, and some with a combination Heat Sink and Fan.  Keep in mind though, that manufacturers are constantly improving the design of their cooling components, thus the shape and design of the heat sink or heat sink & fan can change on any product at any time.

PLEASE NOTE:  Cooling Components Can Change At Any Time, And Do Not Affect The Performance Or Specifications Of The Product.

How Do Heat Sinks Work?
Heat sinks function by transferring high temperature thermal energy (heat) from one object (such as a CPU chip) to a second object (such as the Heat Sink), which has a lower temperature, with a much greater heat capacity. This rapid transfer of heat quickly balances the temperature of both devices, lowering the temperature of the first.  This is what makes a heat sink a cooling device. Since room temperature is usually cooler than the hot device, the Heat Sink helps cool the device, lowering its temp to closer to room temperature.

The most common design of a heat sink is a metal device with many fins or vanes. The high thermal conductivity of the metal combined with the large surface area of the fins does the work to rapidly transfer heat to the surrounding, cooler, air. This cools the heat sink and whatever it is in contact with.  Some Heat Sinks use the metal alone for cooling, some use fluids (just like you car radiator) and a thermal interface material (such as thermal gel) to ensure maximum heat transfer to the heat sink. Adding a fan dramatically improves air flow, and improves the heat transfer even more.

Remember The Thermal Paste!
Remember that when you are adding a Heat Sink, you MUST USE thermally conductive Gel or Paste, to form a good thermal contact between the Heat Sink and the Device.  Failing to use this will result in reduced cooling, and possible failure and damage to the device!
