With broadband internet being adopted in more homes each and every day, the idea of a home network becomes more enticing. As many households have more than one PC, the easiest and most popular way to share the home’s internet connection, as well as provide easy access to files on all connected PCs, is through a home network. This can be achieved through the use of a high-quality router such as the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Wireless Router.
As simple an idea as this is, there are plenty of choices out there, each with their own slew of advantages and disadvantages. The most popular by far is the wireless network. With notebook PCs being as prevalent as they are; it only makes sense to set up a wireless home network if you are going to take the time to set one up in the first place.
The D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Wireless Router comes. It apparently can operate up to 14 times the speed and six times the range of an equivalent wireless G product because it is a draft 802.11n compliant device. It is also compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b networks. This device also offers gigabit LAN ports to keep up with your gigabit network which basically means that the data is smoothly transferred when the data gets to the router which then sends it to other networked computers. You can also see that the DIR-655 is certified to work with Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System.
Moving onto the DIR-655 itself, the glossy white finish gives the router a classy look. The triple antennas on the back should provide a strong enough signal for almost anyone. With a single logo on the top, the DIR-655 has a clean look that should fit in almost anywhere. Along the front, there are a number of lights to signify power, activity status, internet status, WLAN, WCN (USB wireless network setup) and 4 wired port LEDs. Looking around at the back, there is a large yellow sticker covering up the ports and stating that before you connect anything to the router, the setup disk should be ran first. When removed, we see the four gigabit Ethernet ports positioned between two of the three antennas. Moving over, we get to the internet port. This is where the cable from the modem is going to go into. Beside it is a USB port. This can either be used as a print server port as well as a place to use your wireless network setup thumb drive. To the right of the USB port, there is a reset button and the power jack.
The DIR-655 includes all the latest and advanced network security features including 128-bit encryption; WEP, WPA, and WPA2 security protocols; SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) and NAT (Network Address Translation) firewalls. These security features will prevent unauthorized access over a wireless network or from the Internet.
With D-link’s Intelligent QoS technology, it prioritizes both wired and wireless Internet traffic to enable an enhanced online gaming, browsing and communication experience. It is ideal also for streaming HD video or multiple applications simultaneously.

This wireless N router was quick and easy to install for my first wireless network. I get faster speeds on both my wired and wireless computers than with my old wired router. I had trouble with the D-Link USB adapter. D-Link's support is poor at best. A new replacement adapter on an old PC with XP was what was needed. Now we're running 5 computers in the house at about twice the speeds we had before. We can now share a wireless printer through the router and can back up everything on an external hard drive plugged into this DIR-655. It works great, but maybe should have upgraded to a dual band for possibly more features. |

Hi all. Just Upgraded my DIR-615 to this Router. This unit is Faster than the DIR-615 thanks to the Gigabit connection. And I find that the WiFi signal is stronger as well. Setup was very easy. Took me longer to Unpack and wire it up. My only issue is the Brightness of the blue LEDs. I think they are a little too bright. |

I had this working in about 10 minutes. I just hooked it up without the instructions and it worked right away. The signal strength is strong and the product works very well. |

Got this router as an upgrade to Draft N to replace my D-Link 634M Super G. D-Link has only gotten better. The setup interface is very intuitive and you are given loads of options. The signal strength is very strong and the speeds are incredible. I have it behind a Motorola Surfboard Extreme cable modem. I am extremely happy with this router. It has the signal strength to cover the whole house and the speed and bandwidth to stream HD media. I tried other brands, but D-Link has always been the best, I won't buy any other brand. I've always stuck with D-Link and they have never let me down. |

I am very techy and wanted something that had a 1gb lan with modern wifi speeds and technology. For the price, this is the best I found. I was slightly concerned with the possibility of lockups and reboots, but have had no issues in the 3 weeks since I received it. Speed is great and dependability is good. The setup disk didn't work, so I set it up manually. Reception doesn't seem better than the old dlink that it replaced, but it is fine for my ranch home. I am very satisfied. |
