Conduct research, navigate websites and send out emails through the fastest wireless connectivity option available yet. The D-Link Xtreme N™ Gigabit Router (DIR-655) is a draft 802.11n compliant device that delivers up to 14x faster speeds and 6x farther range than 802.11g while staying backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices. Connect the Xtreme N Gigabit Router to a cable or DSL modem and provide high-speed Internet access to multiple computers, game consoles, and media players. Create a secure wireless network to share photos, files, music, videos, printers, and network storage.
Powered by Xtreme N™ technology and equipped with three external antennas, this router provides superior wireless coverage for larger homes and offices, or for users running bandwidth-intensive applications. The DIR-655 also includes a 4-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit switch that connects Gigabit wired devices for enjoying lag-free network gaming and faster file transfers.
Why Intelligent Qos Is Better
With some routers, all wired and wireless traffic, including VoIP, Video Streaming, Online Gaming, and Web browsing are mixed together into a single data stream. By handling data this way, applications like video streaming could pause or delay. With D-Link’s Intelligent QoS Technology, wired and wireless traffic is analyzed and separated into multiple data streams. These streams are then categorized by sensitivity to delay, so applications like VoIP, Video Streaming, and Online Gaming are given priority over Web browsing. This enables multiple applications to stream smoothly to your TV or PC.
Advanced Network Security
The Xtreme N Gigabit Router supports the latest wireless security features to help prevent unauthorized access, be it from over a wireless network or from the Internet. Support for WEP™, WPA™, and WPA2™ standards ensure that you will be able to use the best possible encryption regardless of your client devices. In addition, this Xtreme N router utilizes Dual Active Firewalls (SPI and NAT) to prevent potential attacks from across the Internet.
Delivering best-in-class performance, network security, and coverage, the Xtreme N Gigabit Router (DIR-655) is the ideal centerpiece for your wireless network in the home or office.

D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Wireless Router
Reviewed By Our Editors
With broadband internet being adopted in more homes each and every day, the idea of a home network becomes more enticing. As many households have more than one PC, the easiest and most popular way to share the home’s internet connection, as well as provide easy access to files on all connected PCs, is through a home network. This can be achieved through the use of a high-quality router such as the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Wireless Router.
As simple an idea as this is, there are plenty of choices out there, each with their own slew of advantages and disadvantages. The most popular by far is the wireless network. With notebook PCs being as prevalent as they are; it only makes sense to set up a wireless home network if you are going to take the time to set one up in the first place.
The D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Wireless Router comes. It apparently can operate up to 14 times the speed and six times the range of an equivalent wireless G product because it is a draft 802.11n compliant device. It is also compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b networks. This device also offers gigabit LAN ports to keep up with your gigabit network which basically means that the data is smoothly transferred when the data gets to the router which then sends it to other networked computers. You can also see that the DIR-655 is certified to work with Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System.
Moving onto the DIR-655 itself, the glossy white finish gives the router a classy look. The triple antennas on the back should provide a strong enough signal for almost anyone. With a single logo on the top, the DIR-655 has a clean look that should fit in almost anywhere. Along the front, there are a number of lights to signify power, activity status, internet status, WLAN, WCN (USB wireless network setup) and 4 wired port LEDs. Looking around at the back, there is a large yellow sticker covering up the ports and stating that before you connect anything to the router, the setup disk should be ran first. When removed, we see the four gigabit Ethernet ports positioned between two of the three antennas. Moving over, we get to the internet port. This is where the cable from the modem is going to go into. Beside it is a USB port. This can either be used as a print server port as well as a place to use your wireless network setup thumb drive. To the right of the USB port, there is a reset button and the power jack.
The DIR-655 includes all the latest and advanced network security features including 128-bit encryption; WEP, WPA, and WPA2 security protocols; SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) and NAT (Network Address Translation) firewalls. These security features will prevent unauthorized access over a wireless network or from the Internet.
With D-link’s Intelligent QoS technology, it prioritizes both wired and wireless Internet traffic to enable an enhanced online gaming, browsing and communication experience. It is ideal also for streaming HD video or multiple applications simultaneously.
Lightweight and sleek in design, fast and secure, the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Wireless Router, is indeed a cool product for everyone.

This is pretty good but to get full speed you will need to get the Extreme Wireless N adapter for the computer. The wireless N built into my computer only lets me hit speeds of 130mpbs.
It does have tons of great features and lets you control every thing. It does an ok job of sending the bandwidth to VOIP and streaming but if you have a download going it still eats too much bandwidth.

I own this router for 2 years now and so far I haven't had any issues with it. This router is pretty stable and has really good performance. The menu configuration is a bit getting use to but once you work with it. You will see how easy it is to add devices, configure your network and so on. I have never experience disconnection from it.

Worked great out of the box. Bought this to replace my old DSL router. The wizard on the CD would not log onto my old router like it was supposed to so that it could read all of the existing settings and copy them to the new router, but I just logged onto my old router and copied the settings before unhooking it. Then I installed the new router and logged onto it using web browse and the default IP address. The new router has about 200 more options and settings than the old router but due to the advanced webpage style interface, setup was fast and easy. All I had to do to get online again was enter the ISP login name, pw, and the primary and secondary DNS server values. Adding wireless devices with full encryption was a lot easier than I imagined it would be and those devices (i.e. PSP and two PS3s), have been working perfectly. Since installing this new router, my DSL speed jumped up from 75 kBps to 110 kBps. I never knew that it would actually improve my DSL :-)
