Saved $250 - $400
A friend of mine who is permanently hospitalized, broke the headphone jack within his laptop. I was told the repair is usually a new motherboard-they don't solder on new jack$. This meant looking for a used laptop and there are no funds available for this expense. An external sound card was a VERY welcome suggestion to our audio problem. The sound was the same or better when testing this at home on my DEL PC prior to installing it at the hospital. As a HUGE bonus, the DEL laptop has external volume controls which still worked with this external device.
