Garmin eTrex Legend GPS Navigator
Its compact size, lightweight design, and ease of use has made the Garmin eTrex Legend one of the world’s most popular GPS devices. The brightly-colored eTrex Legend combines all of the intuitive, user-friendly features of the eTrex series with a full basemap of the Americas, the Atlantic or the Pacific and 8 megabytes (MB) of internal memory for storing optional maps. And the Legend is waterproof, so even if you get caught in a storm or drop it in a stream, it will perform flawlessly to help you reach your destination.
Full Basemap of North and South America
With the eTrex Legend, Garmin has loaded a full basemap of North and South America into one small unit. The basemap contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads and coastlines. The Legend also comes preloaded with marine navigation aids. The Legend is also designed to provide precise GPS positioning using correction data obtained from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). This product will provide position accuracy to less than three meters when receiving WAAS corrections. The eTrex Legend is also equipped with additional memory totaling eight megabytes. The added memory allows the eTrex Legend to accept downloaded map data from Garmin's entire line of MapSource CD-ROMs, including Fishing Hot Spots. The eTrex Legend comes in a brightly-colored translucent blue case that really makes the unit stand out. New to the product design, Garmin will include marine aids to navigation in addition to the basemap. These navigational aids will be pre-loaded into each unit from the factory. Order the Garmin eTrex legend and put the great outdoors in the palm of your hand.

I have owned this unit for several years and love it. Very good starter unit. I use this in my vehicle, not for navigating but for finding places of interest at exits along the highway. It will actually list the various restaurant, hotel fuel and other franchises at each exit and tell you where the next closest one is. Has real-time functions like speed, distance traveled, etc.
PROS: Dececnt battery life. Small, intuitive-to-use basic functions. Gives you places of interest at exits along the highways. Extras are very usefull like holder for bike to act as speedometer and odometer.
CONS: You have to be moving in order for it to update the compass. Standing in the same place and moving the unit won't change the direction. Moving about 10 feet updates it. Won't track while traveling in the middle of a car. You have to put the unit next to a window or on the dash. No conversion of coordinates--GPS coordinates only so you have to convert them manually to use for other purposes.

I have had this unit for a few years now and i love it. The Display is a bit hard to read at times, and when i have it in the see through case it can be really challenging in some lighting conditions. This thing has saved my life. I fell through a river deer hunting and submerged it, my self, my pack, my gun, and my stand, and the weather outside was 20 degrees and snowing. I had very little time to find my car, and get warm before hypothermia set in. Not knowing exactly where i was and just after dusk, i fired up my Legend and within 2 minutes i had a fix on my car and was able to march out of the woods soaking wet, cold but alive. If you want a simple backpacking GPS that is light weight, can take a beating, then this is a GPS for you. And its very accurate. I just wish that it had a built in magnetic compas because trying to walk a straight line in thick underbrush trying to get a fix can be challenging, but I've never had a problem.

i didn't buy this one from tiger and i wish i had because i could have saved a few dollars. this is good for hikers, geocachers, or someone wanting an entry level gps. not good for someone wanting gps for driving with turn by turn directions... i use it mostly to track were i go when i snowboard and go places off-road. you can hook into the computer and with software convert the paths you went on and look at them in google earth. if you want to connect it to your computer i recommend buying a serial-usb adapter because many new computers don't have serial ports anymore.

Garmin and other manufactures make a serial to USB cable, I purchased this so I can use my garmin with my Laptop while out geocaching. One set of batteries last roughly 7 hours of Cont. use. My unit will be ready to navigate within 2 minutes of turning it on unless I traveled more than 100 miles since last time using it.
I use it to navigate while hiking with the boyscouts and at work on small rubber boats navigating small channels and then back out to sea.

The Etrex Legend has alot of good features and works well for the price with alot of versatility. Unfortunately, the monochrome display can be unreasonably difficult to see in certain lighting conditions. The non-expandable onboard memory is also too limiting for long trips. There was enough to like about it though that I sold my Legend and bought the new Legend CX, which is a VERY similar unit, but with a fantastic color screen and an expansion slot for a micro SD card which gives 8x the memory capacity of the standard Legend, and the ability to put more data on other cards. It's a bit more than double the price of the standard Legend, but it's so much more advanced in features that it's easily worth the extra price of admission. It's also USB instead of serial, so much faster data transfer to and from your PC. If you're looking for a basic GPS with a decent amount of versatility, the Legend is good. But I suspect you'll end up like me, liking it alot and wishing for more.
