A Great GPS
I bought this GPS because my daughter is new to the area. It works well. She hansn't gotten lost yet. The Delivery was fast. I got it within 2 days of ordering it.

Software Problem
Item works fine if I travel two states away from home. It does not recognize my home state, even after several updates and hours of downloads.

Meets my requirements
I have owned two earlier models of Garmin GPS units. The latest was the Nuvi 265 and this unit is not as great as that one was. Garmin has changed the software a bit but it results in smaller characters on the display that are more difficult to read. I purchased this for the lifetime map updates. This is the second one I received - as the first unit I had to return as it was DOA. It was an inconvenience, but they handled the replacement professionally and timely. I probably would not purchase this unit again, but it does get me from point A to point B reliably.

Not so smart
Over all this gets you where you need to go; but it will take you down a city street with traffic signals for miles that parallels an expressway. The voice commands are a little distorted.

I like it
I purchased 2 of these. Our first. With nothing to compare mine to, I can say that I like it. I made one mistake that all newbies probably make, and that was not realizing that the unit would assume that where I'm going is in the same state that HOME is in. I also chose to not register or update it, yet, in order to avoid the ads. But so far it hasn't made any mistakes, and I do really like it.

Touch Screen imprecise
I have a difficult time with the touch screen. Most of the time the letters I touch are not the ones that appear when I am trying to input an address. It takes me several minutes to input an address. I have another touch screen electronics that is not near as difficult.

I bought mine before Christmas on special offer, I did my research, I did not need any extra toys and it is good value.

It's Not Garmis Fault
I can't provide much for review as I was unable to use this product. Return was handled well, but I'm out shipping money with nothing to show.

Decent replacement
Bought this to replace a nuvi 760 that was getting really old, touchscreen was getting difficult to use and the battery was very old. This last week with the new 1490 has been great. It powers up quicker then the 760, touch screen is very responsive and the view on screen is clearer and more accurate then the 760 was. I am very happy with this gps. I did have some trouble figuring out the lifetime updates, wouldn't work at first but going to the garmin site and downloading updates there worked fine.
