Good value

This is a foolproof external drive. Plug it in to my XP platform USB 2 and it just works. I bought this 2TB for additional storage of audio, video and photographs. Already filled a 1TB Fantom greendrive which has been working flawlessly for over a year. No issues at all with the drive's USB3 working on a USB2 interface. I like the switch to an in-line power supply with standard 3-pin plug which doesn't take up additional plug space on my power bar.

Extremely useful

Just bought my sixth Fantom drive. I was delighted to see that the latest one came with a power supply with a short cord to the brick rather than a power brick that inserts directly into a socket, blocking two and sometimes three sockets on a power strip. All the Fantoms are fast enough for my backup needs; the USB 3.0 is fast enough so that I can run a virtual machine directly from the Fantom.

An Experience

I am new to the use of external HDDs but not new to computers. I have been in IT for over 10 years. I was hoping the drive would have come with the software used for backing up data. Instead I used the Windows 7 backup feature. When I told Windows to back up all.....it did not. I basically lost 3 years worth of data. The experience defeated the purpose of me buying the external drive. Oh well, it could have been user error so I will not blame the drive.

No problems here so far

I purchase this bad-boy, as I am into multimedia, jpeg, bmp, video of mutiple types, and used my devices as a backup for over a year or problem free use. It functioned as plug-and-play. I can choose to keep it turned off until needed, or turn on, and the operating system recognizes it after it initializes. I attempted to user the 4TB unit where my version of Windows Vista had problems identifying the unit, but that's the worst review that I can give; sorry.

Fantoms Made Me Believe

I'm a multimedia artist. I deal with images, video footage, graphics, and animation projects on a regular basis. It is important for me to have a reliable backup storage device. I swear by these. Why? Because I own a 160GB, 1TB, and a 2TB. Unfortunately, I have dropped all them by accident from at least 3 feet high, but they all kept running as if nothing had happened. Now, I only go with Fantom External Drives. I'll be purchasing a new 2TB to replace the 160GB soon.

Spontaneous fire

Initially lvery happy with the drive. Installed in May 2012. The drive unit worked very well until one evening (late September 2012)I saw smoke and a spark coming out of the unit. The unit was plugged into my main computer but was not in use at the time. Appeared to be a spontaneous fire , likely related to enclosure or fan features. Have not disassembled to diagnose yet. Pulled plug. Stopped fire from spreading. If I had not been there my office would have been destroyed by fire. Very scarey! Therefore, I DO NOT recommend this unit. PS -I have 25+ years maintaining & using a small group of computers & have not previously had any computer or peripheral device flame like this.
