protection against intruders from the Internet, the Router features an advanced
Stateful Packet Inspection firewall.

THIS PRODUCT SHIPS IN OEM PACKAGING -
GO GREEN AND SAVE GREEN
Manufacturers sometimes offer discounts when large quantities of products are purchased without fancy, colorful, retail packaging. We take advantage of these opportunities to bring you the same quality, retail product at a lower price. Retail packaging is designed to look good on a store shelf and attract your attention. It frequently includes more paper, plastic and cardboard than needed. OEM packaging is not as visually attractive but is far more economical and because OEM packaging uses less paper, plastic, ink and cardboard it creates less waste and is better for the environment. Although OEM packaged product ships in a plain white or brown box you can be assured it is the same quality product as the retail packaged version. Buying OEM packaged products saves you money and helps save the planet…GO GREEN AND SAVE GREEN. Included accessories, software, documentation, and manufacturer warranties on OEM products may vary from retail versions. Please review our detailed specifications and photo gallery for included accessories and see below for warranty information.

After some work getting the initial settings matched this unit works well as a VPN Endpoint to a WatchGuard Firebox Edge Firewall...
I have owned three Linksys BEFSX42 Firewall Routers over the years. The first died of natural causes after about two years of service. The second was the victim of electricide -- I threw it away. And this latest example of my slow learning curve is that it, too, died of natural causes within two weeks of installation.
The plain truth is that the technology used in this product is so old and stagnant that it hardly qualifies it as an external 'firewall'. I needed something in the enterprise class and tried to save money by buying the BEFSX41.
In truth, I don't believe it is possible to purchase a reliable firebox for under $1,000, and that's where things get very complicated for most of us mere humans.
I would be hard pressed to recommend anything Cisco makes these days, particularly for the retail market. The company is not consumer-friendly.
If you need an external firewall that will really work, spend a lot more to get real internet and network security.

Unless you have something insane like a personal T1 ISP or something (which begs the question: why spend so little on a router for it?), this is perfect for just about anybody. I have one that I use for my dorm room, and my friend shares it with me. Our broadband connection is fast, safe, and smooth with this thing. I haven't yet gotten a warning from my AVG Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware programs, so things are even faster for it.
