The software installed properly. That's the good point. It comes bundled with Cybermedia Power Director and Power Producer. However, aside from PD's awareness that the unit is plugged into the USB port, there is no communication. The preview screen is blank with a known good video source. No settings are available to make them talk nicely to each other. Reinstalling everything made no difference.
An email to Cybermedia resulted in my being told that a capture card is necessary to record external video sources such as a VCR.
Don't bother emailing KWorld's customer ''service''. It apparently doesn't exist.
The thing might work for others. For me it's wasted bucks.

I downloaded the Vista driver from KWorld's website and the install was easy. The software it comes with works OK & it also works with virtualdub. The quality of the video is not that great but it also depends on the source video. It does the job and for the price you can't complain. If you want better quality transfers then get a higher end device. No sync issues at all for me. It looks cheaply made, no surprises there, but it's not bad for a bargain priced capture device if all you need to do is transfer old videos. Just don't expect DVD quality transfers, if that's what you want look for something else.

Burn from VHS to DVD found that play back from the DVD loss image quality and sound quality was loud and distorted in some respects like a bad boot leg movie. I think the sound quality is bad due to the use of the mic input for sound output from the VHS player. There needs to be some Audio tunning available.

I was hesitant in purchasing this product for months after reading some of the reviews. My fear was unfounded after started using it yesterday. I first installed the driver and software on my older IBM 600E laptop. It did not work as well as I hoped. Then I installed it on Lenovo Ideapd Y510 dual-core machine, and it worked perfectly. Using the software that came with it, I was able to capture digital movie out of 11 year old VHS tape. I used the Mic-in to capture the sound and the quality is not bad. The quality of the video is acceptable as well knowing that you can't covert analog VHS to digital 100%. The lesson is if you want to use this device and software, you need better machine to process digital images. Anything lesser than dual-core will not work. I highly recommend this product.

For simplicity the device is quite easy to use however, as mentioned in previous reviews, the software is a bit difficult to navigate compared to others this reviewer has used. The finished DVD video quality was disappointing. After trying it on a Vista machine as well as XP, the picture quality remained quite coarse on a 36'' TV. Perhaps it is a codec issue but there hasn't been one found to work better. There are other PCI capture cards that preform better than this USB device. If you are looking to copy your 8mm, this is not the product for you. If you are requiring some video input and don't care for the quality of picture, then it is a good deal.

I followed the instructions on installing. I had no problems. It recorded beautifully. I must agree with the one review about quality when watching on the TV. I have a 32'' HDTV and I think the VCR plays the movie better than my recorded DVD. Also with the video camera movie. It plays better using the video hooked up to the TV verses the recorded DVD. But I haven't checked to see if I used a better DVD-R.

This unit is cheap! I was supprised to find out how well it works. So maybe I should say it is economical. I used line in (not mic, that did not work) and it works great. Sound is not an issue, just the quality of the original sets the quality of the final product. Unit works well for the price! Now the software is not really all that good. I am now using NERO7 and it works way better. Learning how to make scenes is difficult and I have a lot to learn. So far I have made 6hrs (4 with provided soft ware, 2 with NERO) of Hi8 from my hand held in to digital and made a few DVD's as well. However my scenes are 2 hours long... lol remember, The slower you burn it the better the quality. Also the less programs you have running the better. ALSO directions/read me stink and I have no idea what the button on the unit is for...

As is usually the case with Diger Direct, the product arrived rather quickly. I had no problems loading the software. I'm running Windows Media Center Edition. It doesn't mention in the spec's whether it will run with it, but it does. Although I do have the audio plugged into the Line In, and have Line In selected in the software, I can not hear any audio DURING recording. The final product has audio (although the record level is always too loud regardless of settings.) I have made 3 DVD's and tried them on 3 different DVD players - no problems. The quality recording them from my HI-8 is so-so even at 720X480, but I am using component video cable. Hopfully it will improve with an S-Video cable. Overall, I'm pleased.

The setup is pretty simple, but the software is not as simple. It takes some time to figure it out. The instructions are rather unclear about setup. The video is acceptable, but the sound is not. Since you have to plug into the mic port on your computer, the sound is not worthy of DVD or CD quality. If you are looking to transfer home videos, this is the way to go. If you are looking to copy from DVR to DVD, this is not. The sound quality is quite poor.

I would have given this a higher rating, but there seems to be something wrong with my unit.
The design of this unit is convenient, and when it works it works easily and gets decent quality.
Unfortunatley my captured audio is constantly clipping even with the mic volume on as low as possible AND with mic boost disabled. Also, I have to position the wires JUST RIGHT or the audio gets all crackly and messes up. Also, there is no way to adjust the volume of the audio being recorded aside from the windows mic control.
So if mine were working properly (I sure hope mine ISN'T) then this would be an excellent product.

Bought one of these the other day, and am quite impressed. Have not tried recording yet, as I only bought it so I could play my Xbox on my PC monitor. Sufficed to say, the audio preview quality is perfect, and although the video tends to be a little fuzzy when you use fullscreen, its worth its price. Have only tried composite connections, however, even though it has S-Video capability...I can only hope when I obtain an S-Video cable for my xbox that it will improve the picture quality.
Another point to add, is that the preview framerate SEEMS to be about 20-25 fps. Not incredible, but enough for the job, albeit slightly distracting when trying to play a dance game or something similar. Perhaps it might be a little faster using PCI... In any case, its worth the money paid for it - I can play my xbox on my pc now, so its all good :D

Requires a special sequence to run properly, unclear from instructions: start PVR program, then plug in the USB connector, then click the little TV. Wrong sequence produces an error.
When using the USB connection the system runs quite hot because the device draws power. An external power source option would be nice.
