To start with it is a Garmin which produce some of the best and most innovative Aviation GPS units you know this one will be rock solid and it is!
I live in the country and work in the city and I can tell you it is a good performer with top notch maps. The predicted arrival times are very accurate. The routes selected are very good and it adaps quickly to detours and driving errors.
The only nits I can find are the addresses in the country can be off by 250 meters, it is really good in the city. Lots of options to set to setup the unit if you want to customize it.
I would buy it again if it got stolen.

I can't say enough about the 255. This is my second GPS. The first one is still working but my lady ''borrowed'' it. I would give it five stars except that accuracy when walking in the forest jumps around from set points between 3 to 20ft. No problems driving. Suggest purchasing the power cable that comes with the lifetime traffic service. It is a nice feature to be notified of traffic in the city and given alternate routes.

It doesn't Bluetooth or play MP3's, so if you're looking for straight-up navigation this is the right one for you. I recently moved to a new city and this unit has been enormously helpful - aside from telling me where I am, it has a very large POI database. Hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, and besides telling you how to get there it also has the business phone number. Aside from a couple of minor mapping errors I am completely satisfied with this device and won't leave home without it!

I purchased my Garmin nuvi 255w for $149 new. I saw it on sale for $169 at Cabela's the next day. It is a great price. It works perfectly. You can even plan your routes indoors before you head out. I drove a mountain ridge in between Boise, and Horseshoe Bend ID, and it had all of the logging roads on it. (it would have been really sweet to have topographic maps, but thats a different model.) Really handy for finding that holiday party. I dont have to ask for directions anymore, just the address. no more getting bad directions. Also if your lost in suburbia, and need to get out just type in an intersection or point and zing... your there! This is a great tool to have, and I would totally recomend it for anyone who drives. you can even select different english accents, and foriegn languages for voice directions to make your directions more entertaining. Great GPS

Before reading numerous reviews about this product and knowing friends that have used this device, I was using the VZ Navigator from Verizon Wireless on my phone and this was a huge step up for me. The initial setup was very easy (downloading software updates and maps) and it acquired satellites fairly quickly.
The 4.3 inch screen makes it very easy to read and the automatic day and night display function if very nice.
I did notice there are a few roads that aren't added or available yet. I'm sure they'll be made available in a future update.
One downside is the fact there is no traffic info unless you spend an extra $115.00 for a traffic receiver (which I have already ordered) to get up-to-date traffic info.
Overall, a very well put together product and would highly recommend for new-to-GPS users.

Overall I like this GPS. Its my first one. I looked at several before deciding on this one. I opted for the larger screen so that I could use a qwerty keyboard which did not seem available on the smaller screens.
The pros:
1. Hooked right up to my MacBook with a standard usb to mini. 2. Was able to quickly download custom vehicles
3. Interface is large bright and easy to read.
4. Very intuitive to use
The cons:
1. Too few voice choices and mispronounced words are annoying. It can't say ''ramp'' for instance
2. Errors in street names
3. Missing points of interest ie; a post office that's been there for 5 years does not show up
4. Some routes defy logic.
Update:
Now that I have been using this I have some additional comments.
Updating maps is a problem. The web site constantly makes you re-register and re-load the updating software. (which won't work on safari (OS10.5.8) I have not been able to get the free update.
Its surprising how many streets are mis-ident

I think I left my car unlocked... so I immediately bought a replacement for my beloved 255W. It still was the model with the features I wanted, but it included some updates, the best of which is Canadian postal code lookup (e.g., K1A0R6), which gets me to the block I want much faster than address lookup. In Montreal, which has mostly French street names, the English pronunciation of street names is so bad that I always use a French speaker. Then, then English pronunciation is bad, but it's easier for me to deal with. It's a wonderful thing, particularly when traveling.

Summary:
We purchased this unit about 2 weeks before traveling for business and pleasure. It is exceptionally easy to program and use. The maps are not 100% accurate in South Louisiana (probably due to the meandering roads and waterways). We have not encountered an error that was more than 2 blocks off, but there are errors.
On the other hand, we traveled to NOLA and SoCal, and it was flawless. At one point, we were using the 255W while a relative was using the GPS on her phone. It was like "Dueling GPS units." More often than not, the Garmin was more accurate than her phone. The only advantage her phone had was that it often gave directions about 100 feet prior to the Garmin 255W. The screen is a fingerprint magnet, but they are not noticeable when the unit is on.
Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase and recommend it to anyone who needs an affordable, functional GPS unit

I bought the 255W online and it arrived in two business days. Out of the box, it took 30 seconds to get running. It's my second GPS unit, and my first with a battery. I'd heard horror stories of the maps being years out of date and up to $100 or more for updates. This 'new' units maps are 3 months old.
Last weekend, I decided to test it. Fastest route found me driving down what seemed like dried up river beds and across farmers fields. Nothing that wasn't on the map, and I actually gained time on the others that went the 'normal' route but usually drive faster than I. All in all I think it's a fantastic deal, it goes with me everywhere, and the Mrs wants the new one cause it's got the bigger screen. Battery, tested to exhaustion once, about 3.5-4hrs. Startup is quick and 'rerouting' is fast, 3-5secs after route changes. Definately RECOMMENDED! Maybe next one will get ''WT'' for the traffic warnings.
