I use this to compress mpegs created by my Tivo to mp4 (640x480 ipod high quality setting) to be streamed by my pc to my Playstation 3 via Tversity. When working in tandem with my Dual Core Athlon 3800+, the device encodes at the above (highest) settings a little faster than real time. Both cores on the pc are utilized at about 20-25 percent, leaving lots of resources for other apps.
Playstation 3 plays these mp4 files flawlessly, which is the intended target, and also play back well on the pc. Device encoding is of very good quality (resultant files are a little softer than the source), and the deinterlacing algorithm is excellent.

This product may be OK if you are only trying to encode video for your non-widescreen iPod. However for AppleTV owners or owners of widescreen iPods, this thing is junk. The software doesn't support widescreen resolutions, the 5 times claim for encoding is only for the lowest resolution and their tech support is non-existent. Since I bought this two months ago their online tech support form has been broken. Calling gets you a message that they're not available and to call back.
I will never buy another ADS Tech product again. |
