Gigabyte GA-EX58-EXTREME Motherboard Product Details

Gigabyte GA-EX58-EXTREME LGA1366 Motherboard
The EX58-EXTREME is the latest high performance X58 Series motherboards of GIGABYTE, designed from the ground up to unleash the awesome power of Intel’s new Core i7 processors. Up to 3 VGA cards are supported for either 3 way CrossFireX™ or 3 way SLI™ action, delivering the ultimate in graphics performance for gaming enthusiasts who demand the highest frame rates without compromising on resolution. Equipped with a host of new features including the new QPI interface, 3 channel DDR3 support, Ultra Durable 3 technology and the industry’s most extensive range of overclocking features, the EX58-EXTREME is bringing excitement back into the high performance motherboard industry.

The EX58-EXTREME was designed specifically to take advantage of the raw power of the next generation Intel® Core™ i7 processors and the Intel® X58 Express chipset, whose new evolution in computing architecture is able to deliver an amazing performance break through from past processor generations. Replacing the Front Side Bus is the new Quick Path Interconnect, or QPI, whose 25.6 GB/sec transfer rate (double the bandwidth of the 1600MHz FSB) eliminates the communication bottleneck between the processor and chipset.

GIGABYTE Ultra Durable 3 design, featuring 2 ounces of copper for both the Power and Ground layers which dramatically lowers system temperature by delivering a more efficient spreading of heat from critical areas of the motherboard such as the CPU power zone throughout the entire PCB. GIGABYTE’s Ultra Durable 3 also lowers the PCB impedance by 50%, which helps to reduce electrical waste and further lowers component temperatures. A 2oz Copper layer design also provides improved signal quality and lower EMI (Electromagnetic Interference), providing better system stability and allowing for greater margins for overclocking.

Good mobo

I was pleased with this mobo; a little cheaper than the Asus P6T or Rampage II for essentially similar products. That said, this board IS tight; and, I believe, one will find that reflecting on what to install when, will save you a fair amount of frustration. Cons: The ''Hybrid Silent-Pipe'', [cooler/vent/heat-dispersion for the X-58 chipset], gets inevitably entangled with three other hardware components. Namely, the f_audio cable/module must run behind the Silent-Pipe; and after you attach Silent-Pipe over the f_audio connector, the fit and angle are so tight you will not be able to disconnect the AC '97 or HD_Audio head from the f_audio connector without difficulty or patience. Secondly, the large Silent-Pipe will COMPLETELY cover up the top or initial PCIEX1_1 slot; it also gets in the way- though at least not literally covering, the next PCIEX4_1 expansion slot. This is my largest complaint about this motherboard.

I really liked the board until I tried to add a third GTX260 card. Here's the rub: you can't fully seat the card onto the mobo because the front panel power connector is in the way. Don't understand how a problem this simple made it into production, but I'm disappointed in Gigabyte. My first and last purchase from them.

Pros: This is my first Gigabyte board. Usually I use MSI.This board comes loaded with Sata ports. Nice North Bridge too, makes it look good! So far, the performances are quite nice. Cons: The board is so tight you'd better plan ahead to plug anything... For instance, the speakers connectors for the case are so poorly placed that it is a real hassle to connect them once the North bridge is in place. Same thing for the Sata ports. Price is quite high too... Once thing I don't understand is the choice to make between Raid, AHCI or IDE. I have only Sata disks but Windows crash if I try any other HD drivers than the IDE. I am wondering if i am not losing some speed with this problem. The problem is known but I have not found any answer yet to make it work properly. Put an Intel 965 extreme with 12gigs of Corsair Dominator ram, 2 GTX280 in SLI,all on water, turned it on and away we go.
