D-Link DNS-323 Home Network NAS Product Details

Safely Share Digital Files Locally and Over The Internet
The D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure, when used with internal SATA drives, enables you to share documents, files, and digital media such as music, photos, and video with everyone on the home or office network. Remotely accessing files through the Internet is also possible with the built-in FTP server2. Whether you are allowing access locally or over the Internet, keep data safe by only giving rights to specific users or groups. When configuring the DNS-323, you can create users and groups and assign them to folders with either read or read/write permissions. This is ideal for an office environment with employee-specific sensitive data or for the home where you can ensure your children will only have access to age appropriate material.

Stream Digital Media Content To Upnp™ Av Compatible Media Players
Back up your music, photo, and video collections to the DNS-323 for safekeeping. Then, enjoy the benefits of the built-in UPnP AV media server as you stream digital content to compatible media players (such as those found in D-Link’s MediaLounge™ product line). This feature is highly convenient as it allows you to turn off a computer that would normally be needed for the same function.

Protection, Performance, And Flexibility
The availability of four different hard drive modes (Standard, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID1) allows you to choose the configuration best suited to your needs. Standard mode creates two separately accessible hard drives. JBOD combines both drives in linear fashion for maximum space efficiency. RAID 0 combines both drives in a ‘striped’ configuration, which provides the highest performance, enabling speeds up to 23MBps-Read and 15MBps-Write (MBps: Megabytes per second) when using a Gigabit Ethernet connection. RAID 1 causes the drives to mirror each other, providing maximum protection. If one drive fails while configured as RAID 1, the unaffected drive continues to function as a single drive until the failed drive is replaced. The new drive will then be remirrored, allowing the DNS-323 to return to its full protection.

What This Product Does
The D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure, when used with internal SATA drives, enables you to share your documents, music, photos, and videos across the network and on the Internet so family members, friends, or employees can access them. This enclosure also allows you to create a central network point for backing up valuable files and the built-in RAID 1 mirroring technology protects these files from drive failure. You can also use this device to stream music, photos, and videos to UPnP™ AV compatible network media players.

Robust Software Included
The included CD contains D-Link’s Easy Search Utility. This utility allows you to easily locate the DNS-323 anywhere on the network. Once located, use the utility to map the hard drive(s) so they will appear in My Computer on your PC. Backup software is also included on the CD. This will allow the back up of valuable files from a computer to the DNS-323 manually, by a schedule, or in real-time. Real-time backups are a great way to safeguard against unfortunate accidents that may result in the loss of precious files.

Excellent product

I guess it all boils down to what you use it for. I bought this unit 2 years ago with 2 1TB drives for 2TB capacity. On it I store my media collection. All of my home computers can access it and stream from it without a problem. I am even able to log in online remotely and stream. The FTP server function works well when properly configured. The iTunes server works well if your media collection is small. The larger it is the longer it takes to load. I find it useless. All in all, this is well worth the price for all the features. I need to get 2 new 2TB drives and start over.

Good Product

It does what it is supposed to do. I bought it for nightly backups and it works just fine. I have two 2 TB hard drives in it set to RAID 1.

Excellent for the price

DNS-323 price is excellent, and I added two WD Green 2TB drives to mine. Included documentation is decent. Initially loaded and started the 323 without the firmware upgrade (did not use install CD, accessed DHCP-assigned IP directly), and all worked OK. Then applied the firmware update and glad I did - more choices (drive format and configuration) and features in the firmware (v109) upgrade. I needed max capacity, so I did not RAID (volume1, volume2 using ext3 fs), giving me 4TB (2TB x2) total capacity. My only ding: I could not add it to my Windows domain, but setting the 323's Workgroup to the domain name made it fully accessible. Music and video file playback from files on the NAS is excellent. Configured Windows scripts and backup utilities to backup files and images to the 323 - no problem. (Note: if using Robocopy, must adjust script perimeters to work with Linux-based NAS). Unit is quiet and runs cool. It's been online for a month, and very happy so far.

Works great!

I waited for the DNS-323 to go on sale. It did and I also nabbed a couple of 1 TB drives (also on sale). Everything worked right out of the box. A friend recommended that I do a flash update. I didn't need to. It worked great right out of the box! People have complained about transfer rates. I haven't had any issues. I have 2 laptops, and a desktop using the NAS for the Norton 360 backup location. I have had no issues. But then again, I've only had it for 3 weeks... :) Great product!
