Linksys WRT300N Wireless N Router
The Wireless-N Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

The Access Point built into the Router uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections up to 4 times farther than standard Wireless-G.

With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. It works great with standard Wireless-G and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the router can increase the throughput even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds up to 12 times as fast as standard Wireless-G. But unlike other speed-enhanced technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable this double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds. In congested areas, the "good neighbor" mode ensures that the Router checks for other wireless devices in the area before gobbling up the radio band.

To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. It can serve as your network's DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

The incredible speed of Wireless-N makes it ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and Voice over IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams through the network at the same time, with no degradation in performance. With the Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games, and run media-intensive applications at faster than 10/100 wired network speeds, without the hassle of stringing wires!

Reviewed By Our Editors

Speedy and reliable, this Wi-Fi networking device is definitely a router to contend with. It boasts of having speed capabilities that is up to 12 times faster than Wireless-G, while at the same time remains compatible with other Wireless-G and Wireless-B enabled devices. One of its key features is the wireless interface that supports the draft version of the 802.11n standard. Wireless data transfer rates for the Linksys WRT300N Wireless N Router can reach up to 300mbps.

Besides the fast router, every Linksys WRT300N Wireless N Router package contains a stand for vertical installation, complete documentation and manuals, a CD containing an electronic manual and a trial version of Norton Internet Security, a Category 5 Fast Ethernet cable, and lastly, a capable power adapter.

Through the help of the well-documented user guide and installation wizard that comes in a CD, setting up this router was undeniably easy. If you would like to skip the wizard even, all you’d have to do to access the tool is to type in the router’s default IP address (192.168.1.1) into your browser. This tool can help you breeze through the set-up of the Linksys WRT300N Wireless N Router’s various features, such as the four-port 10/100 Ethernet switch, SPI firewall, DHCP server, DMZ and VPN pass-throughs, and WPA2 security, to name a few.

The Linksys WRT300N Wireless N Router’s appealing case design boasts of three antennas: two standard, pen-shaped antennas and a third one that’s shaped like a paddle. These antennas can be adjusted easily, bent or rotated in multiple directions, for optimum signal reception whether the unit is placed vertically or horizontally. Like other routers, it has one WAN and four LAN ports, and a pinhole reset button. The ports are color-coded, too: the WAN port is blue and the LAN, yellow.

Along with the color-coded ports, The Linksys WRT300N Wireless N Router also features properly-labeled LED lights matching the ports on the other side of the router, a light to indicate that the router is experiencing wireless activity, and another one to show that the security settings are active. All these light indicators aid the users in knowing what the current status of the router is.

Aside from DHCP, the router also features TCP/IP and NAT routing protocols. Its firewall features include MAC address and URL filtering, besides the previously-mentioned SPI.

Overall, its maximum throughput and mixed-mode throughput rate well, and with the Linksys WRT300N Wireless N Router’s 802.11n spec, you can expect high throughput at great distances. Because of the reasonable price, good maximum throughput, an organized documentation, and long warranty, The Linksys WRT300N Wireless N Router is definitely a better, more affordable choice for all your wireless networking needs.

Suprised by the few bad reviews, I have had this router for almost 1 year now and it rocks. Never have any trouble with it except, like all routers, must occasionally reboot/refresh. Always recovered full speed.

Worked intermittently for a week, then nothing. I've done soft reboots, and hard reboots. I even tried upgrading the firmware. Now I can connect to the router through a wired connection for a bout five minutes, then it dies. BEWARE.

Another Great product from linksys. I did have a bit problem with the signal in one part of the house, but I easily fixed that buy changing the location of the Router. Other than that its an awesome product. The price is a little to much but I don't mind spending the extra money.
