Thin Client Terminals

Thin Client Computers are end-user devices which are a component of a larger computing infrastructure powered by a server or server farm. A Thin Client Terminal is usually a small form factor computer that depends on a remote server for its computations.

Many features typically found on the desktop PC including applications, sensitive data, and memory are stored in the data center servers. They usually run on a full OS, commonly Linux, Windows Embedded and Windows CE. Thin clients are used as PC replacements in a server-side infrastructure and they make use of cloud computing software like application virtualization, hosted shared desktop (HSD) or desktop virtualization (VDI).

Thin clients provide businesses a cost-effective way to create a VDI. Thin clients are utilized in various industries that have similar requirements for cost, security, manageability, and scalability benefits.

While a traditional thin client contains a full operating system, a zero client makes use of very lightweight firmware that merely initializes network communication through a basic GUI. Zero Clients have less demand for complex hardware and are thus less prone to obsolescence.

Another key benefit is it is more secure than a Thin Client. Further, the local firmware is so simple that it requires very little setup or ongoing administration, but the trade-off is its loss of flexibility. Zero clients are also often used in a virtual desktop infrastructure environment and are also known as Ultrathin Clients.
