Tiger is awesome, but this product is not. I received my first drive very quickly from tiger; however, it had trouble writing most DVD media. Tiger quickly exchanged it for me - the replacement is awesome for single-sided media; however, with 3 different media on the supported list, and even after the firmware upgrade, I got 10 double-layer coasters. I contemplated keeping the drive because it is so fast with single layer media, but the rebate company (onrebate) refused to honor the rebate due to my asking for the rebate check to be sent to my home, but I had ordered the drive to my office. After repeated phone calls and e-mails, they informed me I could not receive the rebate. With this in mind, and the drive's inability to write DL media, I phoned Tiger - Tiger is awesome! They quickly offered a refund both on the drive and the media. As usual, Thank you Tiger! But, Plextor and OnRebate both need work.

I saw the unit advertised with rebates and I said 'I already have a NEC unit, why another one? The answer is, man is this one quick, quiet and reliable! I made copies and backups of my stuff quickly, quietly and very securely with this unit. It burns the discs about twice as fast as my older NEC unit, and reads them even faster. Good deal for the money!!

I have nothing but positive comments regarding this burner. It is fast, and offers great compatibility with virtually all media types and formats.
In other reviews, some have mentioned fan noise as a negative. While not totally silent, I find this drive's noise generation to be significantly below that of my computer's cooling system, so it is virtually unnoticed. Even when I shut the PC down, at times I have forgotten to turn the Plextor off because its noise is not noticible.
The unit is solidly built and I like the fact that the power supply is more like that of a laptop PC--no wall wart. Tiger Direct's rebate deal is excellent. I was instrumental in 2 coworker's purchases of the sam eunit and they are very pleased as well.

What Is
FireWire?
FireWire (also known as the IEEE 1394 interface) is a serial bus interface
standard, for high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data
transfer, used on PCs & MACs , with storage devices, and with digital audio
and digital video devices. The interface is also known by the brand names of
FireWire (Apple's name) and i.LINK (Sony's name).
FireWire has replaced SCSI in many applications, due to lower costs and a
simplified, more adaptable cabling system. IEEE 1394 has been adopted as the
High Definition Audio-Video Network Alliance (HANA) standard connection
interface for A/V (audio/visual) component communication and control.
FireWire is also available in wireless, fiber optic, and coaxial versions.
Almost all modern digital camcorders have included this connection since
1995, as do the vast majority of high end professional audio interfaces.
Since 2003 many computers intended for home or professional audio/video use
have built-in FireWire/i.LINK ports, even some iPods. It is also available
on many motherboards. FireWire has also become a dominant local
storage interface, for use with external storage devices, such as external
hard drives..

Selecting and Installing Optical Drives
If you want to upgrade your existing optical drives or add something new,
like a DVD drive, here are some easy tips to follow to help you make your
choice. For your convenience, we’ve included nearly a score of simple
installation hints, along with helpful photographs, to assist you.
What Is USB 2.0?
USB 1.1 was great when it was introduced almost a decade ago. But
the newer USB 2.0 transfers data dramatically faster - up to 40 times
quicker. Plus, USB 2.0 provides additional bandwidth for multimedia and
storage applications, which are growing larger every year. Also to your
advantage is the fact that USB 2.0 is forward and backward compatible with
USB 1.1, which means that cables and connectors made for the original USB
configuration will also work perfectly in a USB 2.0 port, though some newer
devices are specifically designed for USB 2.0. It is always a good
idea to verify the version of USB supported by each device you want to use.
