Brocade VCS and FCoE - license Product Details

Brocade VCS Fabric technology helps organizations create efficient data center networks that just work. Ethernet fabrics built on Brocade VCS Fabric technology provide unmatched VM awareness and automation compared to traditional network architectures and competitive fabric offerings. In addition, they increase flexibility and IT agility, enabling organizations to transition smoothly to elastic, mission-critical networks in highly virtualized data centers.

As the trend toward server virtualization and cloud computing continues to grow, IT organizations must be able to support more - often much more, in terms of data and network traffic - with less, and do so much more quickly. In addition, a number of regulations have forced a stronger focus on data security and control. These business realities, along with improvements in WAN/LAN performance, have contributed to a retrenchment of IT operations and investments back into the data center.

But there are important differences in how the "new" data center must be architected, since server-to-server transactions now exceed data center-client exchanges. IT domains that had developed independently in the client/server era have become much more interdependent, and the ability to coordinate resource allocation synchronously across servers, storage, and networks is increasingly necessary to guarantee application availability.

The FCoE protocol was developed by the INCITS Technical Committee T11 as part of the T11 FC-BB-5 project. The FCoE protocol and the FCoE Initialization Protocol (FIP) are defined in FC-BB-5, which describes how other protocols are transported and mapped over a Fiber Channel network.

FCoE is a industry-standard protocol that enables the transport of Fiber Channel storage traffic over enhanced lossless Ethernet links. To achieve that goal, FCoE simply encapsulates, or wraps, Fiber Channel frames into Ethernet frames and prepares them for transport over Data Center Bridging (DCB) links. It is important to note that FCoE simply wraps the entire Fiber Channel frame as-is without any modifications.

The fact that the Fiber Channel payload remains intact throughout its FCoE journey means that FCoE preserves the Fiber Channel constructs and services and enables FCoE solutions to utilize existing management applications. As a result, FCoE solutions are designed to integrate seamlessly into existing Fiber Channel environments without introducing incompatibilities or disrupting existing infrastructures.

FIP is the control plane protocol that is used in the discovery and initialization stages of establishing links among the elements of the fabric. Once discovery and initialization are established and the nodes have successfully performed fabric login, the FCoE data plane frames are used for data transmission operations. Unlike FCoE frames, FIP frames do not transport Fiber Channel data, but contain discovery and Login/Logout parameters. FIP frames are assigned a unique EtherType code to distinguish them from FCoE frames with Fiber Channel storage data.
