Knew it!!
Friend has this unit and is as the others say, noisy and costly. I RESEARCH before buying and wish my friend did the same before purchase. I bought a BUFFALO 3TB and is the BEST unit on the market and love this unit. Dependable, huge cap, easy set-up, good software, good price ($230)and guiet like a church mouse. Need I say more.

use RAID
good in raid, and it tells you what is happening. it is also noisy, like a furnace duct. lately, the drive was making really busy sounds like it was reallocating space. then it sent me an email telling me that HDD2 had died (11 months). luckily I had used the raid setup! .... do remember that it uses consumer grade hdd's, so don't pin your life on it! when registering for return, register the part that failed, not the total drive. ie, pull out the dead drive and register it. this is much simpler for the process. and, do phone the manufacturer. they are well practiced at this type of failure, and have a fast 10 buck deliver the good (refurbished) drive before returning dead drive system that took only one day for me. would I buy again? probably not, as other drives seem to live much longer. and the service site has too much information making it hard to find what matters. but at least, if you accept that the drive will fail quicly, the repair process is good

Ive Seen Better From Seagate
Seagate typically is Iconic to me as the best or one of the best in Hard Drives, but they fell a bit short of the mark in this product. While it does as advertised, it's Noisy (like a hot water heater boiling water) when writing, and the read back (even in optimal Stripe mode, no mirroring) is lacking. I had at least the same if not better read speed from my USB attached storage. Overall, wouldn't buy it again.

There is no excuse for poor design
We got one of these units and they are very cumbersome to setup. They have a default partition that is fine but if you want to setup user permissions and partitions it is like carving granite with a wet noodle. Lower price Seagate hard drives allow for incremental backups but this unit does not. I even contacted Seagate to confirm and they said that it only performs full backups. This is useless as a practical means of backing up daily data. Do they really think we want to copy 4 terabytes to a USB back up drive every night???? All in all it is lots of drive for little money but you definitely ONLY get what you pay for. Buy something else.
