I bought this product because I had several dozen VHS tapes that were gathering dust in my basement and I wanted some way of preserving family events from the 80's and early 90's. After much research, including the idea of outsourcing the job of digitizing the tapes' contents, I settled on this product. It is by far the cheapest way I know of converting analog tapes to digitized form. I basically used only USB jump drives to capture the digital output (in mp4 format) using the best quality setting. I was able to convert all tapes without loss of quality and I now have a several megabytes of digital video that I can edit on my PC and produce great DVDs in time for the holidays. Recommended without reservations. O, you do need an analog device such as a VCR to play the tapes and produce video and audio output.

Though it sounds easy, converting my external hard drive to a fat 32 was not something I could do myself. Now the hard drive can't be connected to my computer beause apparently the computer is too old, or I need to upgrade my USB or something. So I guess you just have to be a computer wiz to be able to use even the simplest gadgets!
excellent

had to transfer some shows from a direct tv dvr. all i had to do was reformat a spare 500gig hard drive to a fat32 system. It was as easy as staring the capture device and playing the show. no computer needed. the pinnacle website has videos so you can see how easy it is. Burned over 40 shows to dvd to help her teach in the classroom.
