I got this for around 80 bucks but the attena was not good i could only get 4 channels plus the remote is not really good

Great device, crap software

I love the HVR950Q. It's a super little tuner, very portable and durable. You can use it for over-the-air reception or QAM cable. I haven't noticed big problems with heat that some other reviewers mentioned. The little antenna that comes with it isn't much good unless you are standing under the transmitter so you will have to plug it into a big antenna for OTA. The WinTV software that comes with it is junk. It is buggy as all get out and freezes up more than it doesn't, especially when recording. It also assigns its own numbers to channels. The only advantage to WinTV software is it reads all QAM channels, so check out the full list to see if you have some extra channels not listed by your cable company. If you want to record using this tuner, use it with other software such as Windows Media Center or Nero Vision (which don't show all the QAM channels, just what is in your provider's basic spectrum). As bad as the software is, the tuner is that good.

Stops working occasionally

Some days it works fine; others it just stops working. Sometimes I get a message saying that it has stopped working and other times not. Sometimes restarting works, other times I must reselect the channel. I'm running Windows 7.

i just bought this product 2 days ago to go with my new quad core laptop and i a not reall impressed with it. The unit gets realy hot and stations cut out and picture quaulity is very fuzzy. as for the romote not worth it i think this one is going back to the store.

Fantastic Reception!

This is my 2nd USB tuner last was Avermedia but broke. Amazing reception with the little portable antenna,. I get all channels 25 miles from the source. That is far better than an amplified UHF antenna I have attached to a TV. I haven't used all the DVR features and I can't say the controls on-screen are that intuitive but perfomance is most important to me. If you can't get reception you can't record. Great picture on my laptop and Windows 7 recognized it right away. The included extension is nice since not having one is how I broke my first tuner. Price is about $20-$30 more than I hoped to pay but this is one of the few Windows 7 tuners out there.

Fabulous unit

There's only two things to mention that's not favorable, it gets HOT when in use. I keep mine away from everything so there is no fire hazard- yeah, it gets pretty darn hot. The supplied antennae is all but worthless but most any decent cheapy makes this unit run fabulous. Crystal clear reception and a host of channels from the air I didn't know existed. Love this unit!

The complex I am in at present has wireless. The signal or channel I do not know anything keeps changing from one to seven So I bought an usb antenna, modemrouter and this This products antenna is not strong enough now I have three antennas going in to my laptop it does not pick up the movies unless positioned near the modemrouter. I didn't need the install. The software installed it on media center all by itself The graphics sound and speed of my laptop improved though

Nothing much more to add. The instructions are a tad vague... but it's not rocket surgery! ;) I would highly recommend this!

Great item

I installed the item in my laptop and had no problem. Huppage makes very good products and I own two other Hauppage items. other reviews say that the remote is too small or flimsy and that the tuner gets too warm. Who wants a big hulken piece of machinery and all tuners run warm. I bought this for emergency use and it goes in my bag nicely and does not take up much space or weight. The extra cables and antenna add to versatilty. Great item.
