  • Quad-Core Processor
    Provides four complete execution cores in a single processor with up to 12 MB of L2 cache and up to a 1333 MHz Front Side Bus. Four dedicated, physical threads help operating systems and applications deliver additional performance, so end users can experience better multi-tasking and multi-threaded performance across many types of applications and work loads.
  • Intel® Wide Dynamic Execution
    Improves execution speed and efficiency, delivering more instructions per clock cycle. Each of the four cores can complete up to four full instructions simultaneously.
  • Intel® Smart Memory Access
    Optimizes the use of the data bandwidth from the memory subsystem to accelerate out-of-order execution. A newly designed prediction mechanism reduces the time in-flight instructions have to wait for data. New pre-fetch algorithms move data from system memory into fast L2 cache in advance of execution. These functions keep the pipeline full, improving instruction throughput and performance. 45nm versions further improve this feature, with more efficient methods of loading and storing data in main memory.
  • Intel® Advanced Smart Cache
    Provides shared level 2 cache across each pair of cores that can be dynamically allocated to each processor core, within the pair, based on workload. This efficient implementation increases the probability that each core within the pair can access data from fast L2 cache, significantly reducing latency to frequently used data and improving performance.
  • Intel® Advanced Digital Media Boost
    Accelerates the execution of Streaming SIMD Extension (SSE) instructions to significantly improve the performance on a broad range of applications, including video, audio, and image processing, and multimedia, encryption, financial, engineering, and scientific applications. The 128-bit SSE instructions are now issued at a throughput rate of one per clock cycle effectively doubling their speed of execution on a per clock basis over previous generation processors. 45nm versions include a new Super Shuffle Engine, which improves existing SSE instructions while enabling significant gains on the latest SSE4 instruction set. SSE4-optimized applications, such as video editing and encoding in high-definition resolution, will see additional performance improvements.
  • Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT)
    Allows one hardware platform to function as multiple “virtual” platforms. Intel® VT improves manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions.
  • Intel® 64 Architecture
    Allows the processor to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel® 64 architecture can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory.
  • Execute Disable Bit
    Provides extended virus defense when deployed with a supported operating system. Memory can be marked as executable or non-executable, allowing the processor to raise an error to the operating system if malicious code attempts to run in non-executable memory. This can prevent the code from infecting the system.
  • Digital Thermal Sensor (DTS)
    Provides for more efficient processor and platform thermal control improving system acoustics. The DTS continuously measures the temperature at each processing core. The ability to continuously measure and detect variations in processor temperature enables system fans to spin only as fast as needed to cool the system. The combination of these technologies can result in significantly lower noise emissions from the PC.
  • Intel Designed Thermal Solution for Boxed Processors
    Includes a 4-pin connector for fan speed control to help minimize the acoustic noise levels generated from running the fan at higher speeds for thermal performance6. Fan speed control technology is based on actual CPU temperature and power usage.

Excellent proccessor easy to overclock to 3.4 but gets tricky past that. definatly runs very cool, rarly goes above 30 c with air where as my q6600 would run around about 60 c at 3.2 with air cooling.both had same after market cpu fans. have to OC thru FSB bus because cpu ratio locked at 8. definetly quick, would recommend.

Combined with the MSI P7N Diamond motherboard, I was able to get this Q9450 to POST at 3.62Ghz. That is with a LOT of voltage modding. Just check out the MSIHQ forums to get similar settings. I don't use these settings for gaming, it's not stable. I tone it down to 3.4Ghz. Remember to set the FSB/RAM ratio to 2:1. IE. 1750/875. Temps stay around 130F stock fan. Very amazing results. Hit a 15,000 3DMark 06 test score with 3.4Ghz, P7N, and a XFX 9800GTX. Highly recommended!!

all i have to say is AMAZING. Running on 790i ultra with 4 gigs ddr3 @ 1800MHz with gtx 280. Upgraded from q9300. This card blows the q6600 and the q9300 out of the water. This is prolly the best processor for the money.

I can't speak any less of Intel (5 stars) because this processor is just that good. My mobo is the nForce 750i (awesome board) and that combination is very competitive with anything else on the market. Performance is excellent (multitasking anyone?) This processor is silent, cool, and it comes with an adequate fan\heatsink. It averages 37-40 C on idle, 49 on full load. Overclocking to 3.2 Ghz is a breeze (add 9 C, tho). Overall this proc. is a 10 out of 5. No regrets (though relatively expensive.)

What You Should Know

Heat Sinks - Many Shapes & Sizes!
A heat sink (or heatsink) is an object that absorbs and dissipates heat from another object using thermal contact (either direct or radiant). Heat sinks are used in a wide range of applications wherever efficient heat dissipation is required; including for CPUs, Memory, Video Cards, and more.

Heat Sink Shapes Change!
Many products come with a Heat Sink, and some with a combination Heat Sink and Fan.  Keep in mind though, that manufacturers are constantly improving the design of their cooling components, thus the shape and design of the heat sink or heat sink & fan can change on any product at any time.

How Do Heat Sinks Work?
Heat sinks function by transferring high temperature thermal energy (heat) from one object (such as a CPU chip) to a second object (such as the Heat Sink), which has a lower temperature, with a much greater heat capacity. This rapid transfer of heat quickly balances the temperature of both devices, lowering the temperature of the first.  This is what makes a heat sink a cooling device. Since room temperature is usually cooler than the hot device, the Heat Sink helps cool the device, lowering its temp to closer to room temperature.

The most common design of a heat sink is a metal device with many fins or vanes. The high thermal conductivity of the metal combined with the large surface area of the fins does the work to rapidly transfer heat to the surrounding, cooler, air. This cools the heat sink and whatever it is in contact with.  Some Heat Sinks use the metal alone for cooling, some use fluids (just like you car radiator) and a thermal interface material (such as thermal gel) to ensure maximum heat transfer to the heat sink. Adding a fan dramatically improves air flow, and improves the heat transfer even more.

Remember The Thermal Paste!
Remember that when you are adding a Heat Sink, you MUST USE thermally conductive Gel or Paste, to form a good thermal contact between the Heat Sink and the Device.  Failing to use this will result in reduced cooling, and possible failure and damage to the device!
