PCI Express 2.0 - High End Graphics Have Arrived
PCI Express Base 2.0 specification doubles the interconnect bit rate from 2.5 GT/s to 5 GT/s in a seamless and compatible manner. The performance boost to 5 GT/s is by far the most important feature of the PCI Express 2.0 specifications. It effectively increases the aggregate bandwidth of a 16-lane link to approximately 16 GB/s. The higher bandwidth will allow product designers to implement narrower interconnect links to achieve high performance while reducing cost.

A number of optimizations and improvements have been made to the protocol and software layers of the PCI Express architecture in the PCI Express Base 2.0 specification. These include:

Dynamic link speed management – to control the speed at which the link is operating
Link bandwidth notification – to notify software (operating system, device drivers, etc) of changes in link speed and width
Capability structure expansion – to expand the control registers to better manage devices, slots and the interconnect

PC Sound Cards

A sound card (also known as an audio card) is a computer expansion card that facilitates the input and output of audio signals to/from a computer under control of computer programs. Typical uses of sound cards include providing the audio component for multimedia applications such as music composition, editing video or audio, presentation/education, and entertainment (games). Many computers have sound capabilities built in, while others require additional expansion cards to provide for audio capability. Sound cards usually feature a digital-to-analog converter, to convert recorded or generated digital data into an analog format. The output signal is typically connected to an amplifier, headphones, or external device using standard interconnects, such as a TRS connector or an RCA connector.

Another important characteristic of sound cards is polyphony, which is more than one distinct voice or sound playable simultaneously and independently, and the number of simultaneous channels. These are intended as the number of distinct electrical audio outputs, which may correspond to a speaker configuration such as 2.0 (stereo), 2.1 (stereo and sub woofer), 4.1 or 5.1 etc.). Sometimes, the terms "voices" and "channels" are used interchangeably to indicate the degree of polyphony, not the output speaker configuration.

Today, a sound card providing actual hardware polyphony, regardless of the number of output channels, is typically referred to as a "hardware audio accelerator", although actual voice polyphony is not the sole prerequisite, with other aspects such as hardware acceleration of 3D sound, positional audio, surround sound, and real-time DSP effects being more important. Since digital sound playback has become available and provided better performance than synthesis, modern soundcards with hardware polyphony don't actually use DACs with as many channels as voices, but rather perform voice mixing and effects processing in hardware inside a dedicated DSP. The final playback stage is performed by an external DAC with significantly fewer channels than voices (e.g., 8 channels for 7.1 audio, which can be divided among 32, 64 or even 128 voices).

Great Card

This is a great up grade for anyone who want to get off of the nasty on board sound cards. The sound is great under Windows but the sound quility is is not as good under linux.

Good clean fun

Sound is great lots of features, low overall price. Sound is wonderful on a good set of speakers and GOOD wiring. I can't stress good wiring - it keeps noise and sound out of the card. also make sure your power supply is in good condition. High draw video cards can cause noise in the audio on barely adequate power supplies.

Better than the Realtek

Have a Intel Mainboard that had the Realtek sound processer get a electrical spike and burn out. I could not afford the Realtek equip. so I jumped on this Creative prod. Works better because of the options avail. to the user for customizing the sound. Software interface is easier to access than Realtek's. Use the 5.1 speaker sys. to play during TV watching rather than HD TV speaker sound bar (sony)...live and learn.
