I really dont get what all the OS griping is about. If you have an old machine and its not running right, you cant just slap in a new OS to fix all your problems. I have never upgraded an OS on a MS compatible system. If i really really really want a new OS, its time to start with a new system and then start adding the old hardware to see if it is compatible. I've been using VISTA without difficulty for months, its a slick package minus a few quirks. But of course it came pre installed on a quad core off the shelf system, and i have been very careful to only upgrade it with vista certified hardware....but thats about as tough as putting the right oil in your car...

Read the find print!
Technical Support Information: Since this is an OEM operating system it does not come with any free technical support. Telephone technical support is available through a paid service via a toll-free number and a charge per call. The phone number is included on your packing slip when you order.
Returns policy: OEM software is not returnable for any reason.
If like me you like saving money this is a great offer! OEM = money in your pocket.

XP Pro is a great operating system, however a BIG caution to people who buy an OEM license and have no idea what that means. OEM licenses are cheaper for several reasons, and lack of packaging is NOT one of them! An OEM license may be installed on one machine only, AND NEVER LEGALLY transfered to ANY OTHER MACHINE! An OEM license also DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY SUPPORT from Microsoft. An OEM license was designed for HP or Dell, and part of the legal agreement when buying an OEM license is that the OEM will support the software. If you buy an OEM license you agree to provide support to yourself! If you don't have the skills buy a retail license.

You need to be very careful to understand the risk with purchasing OEM software. My disk had the infamous CRC error from being a bad disk. Attempts to get another one was a nightmare. Tiger Direct referred me to Microsoft, who referred me to the OEM software ''fly-by-night'' company, who referred me to several more departmental numbers. After a week of calling numbers and hours of hold, the final solution was to apply for a replacement disk with a paper application by snail mail. I finally gave up and wrote off the $139. Beware the risk. If your disk does not work, or the license is invalid, you are out $139.

Just used this to upgrade an older machine after slapping in a bunch of new hardware (drives, ram, processor, etc). Cannot say enough about how easy the process was. Definitely recommend this for anyone thinking about installing XP on a machine themselves to save some money over the retail version. This has everything you need, plus SP2 to handle larger drives natively, so what else could you ask for? Excellent value for the money.

This is the best operating system out there and none to date even from Apple beat it for compatibility, user-friendliness and strength. You always have to maintain any computer and using the right programs will do this, some of them are even free. Correction, Bill did NOT steal anything from Steve Jobs, because that would be clearly illegal and Bill would be convicted of that in a court of law. The Apple company lost when Windows was released and I have never looked back.

Do ALL of these reviewers work for Microsoft? If you have ANY problem with installing XP Pro, you can forget any help from MS. After running the compatible test before installing XP Pro, they said everything was good, but when installed the whole story was exactly the opposite. If you do NOT work for Microsoft, never buy any Windows OS to install on your own unless you enjoy being terrorized. The old man.
