I have tried others but the Magellan has intuitive functions, you don't need the book. It gives you the information you need when you need it.

I bought this unit along with a navigon and a garmin. All were in the same price rannge. The Magellan was unable to find my address. There was some lag & voice command was useless. You could just about try any other GPS & do better. I liked the Garmin Nuvi 240 the best. If you can find it on sale. Navigon 5100 is 2nd best. You may find both units around $250 if you look hard enough.

I had purchased this unit, along with a different one for my wife. I found that both of the Magellan units did not have my own street listed and I have lived here for 4+ years. The street next to us wasn't there either. I called them and they said that it could be added, but they were wrong as I tried while on the phone with them. They said that it would be updated in 12-18 months and in the meantime, I could just put in a street that was close by! To top it off, they were not even going to offer us a discount, but would have to pay for the next full set of maps. I felt that if two streets were missing just like that, there have to be a lot more. The units went back. I looked at several other brands and the only one that had it correct was TomTom - and they even have a mapshare feature that you can download other people's map corrections every few weeks.

A little disappointed by the problems I have had the past month with my 4050. Voice command is of no use - takes much longer to get to the menu so I end up pushing the screen.
Acqu times have gotten worse. Sometimes almost instant but past few days I have covered almost 8 miles (each day) before it has acquired a good signal (I live in the country so no excuses). Using the unit to travel the same route to work it will give me a different way to go every other day. One day it is this way - two days later it tries another way - Always with the same settings - makes no sense. A few times it has been confused. Maps are quite out of date - POI's are out of date too (some places have been closed for a few years but are still recommended.
Voice prompts are sometimes garbled. Screen is bright/Clear. Like the 1yr extended warranty option from AAA (free for members).
I have lost too much confidence to keep it. I will be returning (I hate to give bad reviews - I just cant recommend it

I received my Maestro 4050 a short while ago and I am still content with my purchase. It locked up on me pretty quickly, but I beleive it was more operator error than the unit. The reception is fantastic and so far I am really happy with the voice recognition program. I was somewhat unhappy that the package didn't come with a hardcopy manual to carry along in the car, but there is a manual on CD that came along with the GPS and it is easily printed off. I haven't had the opportunity to use the traffic kit, but review of the manual indicates that it is for the most part limited to larger cities. All in all, I'm happy with the unit and for the price....it is a great buy. I'd recommend to a friend.

The voice recognition works under most conditions but locks up and the unit needs to be reset to get it to work again. This happens everytime on my unit when the gps is turned off in the middle of a route and back on again to resume the trip. There needs to be more voice recognition commands to make this a really valuable feature. Right now it's more of a novelty. The refresh rate seems slower and jerky compared to my old Magellan 700 but it's adeqauate. The antenna reception is truly amazing even indoors. The battery life is only two hours which is marginally useful while driving but comes in handy when programing indoors. The windsheild mount works very well. I'm still evaluating the traffic kit option. On a drive from Philadelphia to Washington DC none of the reports were that accurate and I doubt I'll extend the service after the free subscription expires. I think the unit at $399 is about $99 too much. I'm not dissatisfied but had hoped for a little more performane
