D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Gigabit Router
The D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Gigabit Router provides your wireless network the speed it needs to handle intensive data. Stream HD videos, conduct research, browse through your emails as it ensures blazing fast wireless connection, all made possible by the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Gigabit Router. This Gigabit router is a draft 802.11n compliant device with backwards compatibility with 802.11g and 802.11b devices. It delivers up to 14x faster speeds and 6x farther range than 802.11g, which allows you to experience high-speed Internet access whenever you need it. Just simply connect the router to a cable or DSL modem to provide fast web connection across multiple computers, game consoles, and media players. Powered by Xtreme N™ technology, the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Gigabit Router expands wireless coverage for larger homes or offices.
What It Is And Why You Need It:
- 4-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit switch; connects Gigabit wired devices such as computers, game consoles, and media players for high-speed web access
- Draft 802.11n compliance; delivers up to 14x faster speeds and 6x farther range than 802.11g
- Xtreme N™ technology & 3 external antennas; provides excellent wireless coverage for larger homes or offices

A Closer Look

Powered by Xtreme N™ technology and equipped with three external antennas, this router provides superior wireless coverage for larger homes and offices, or for users running bandwidth-intensive applications. The DIR-655 also includes a 4-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit switch that connects Gigabit wired devices for enjoying lag-free network gaming and faster file transfers.
Why Intelligent Qos Is Better
With some routers, all wired and wireless traffic, including VoIP, Video Streaming, Online Gaming, and Web browsing are mixed together into a single data stream. By handling data this way, applications like video streaming could pause or delay. With D-Link’s Intelligent QoS Technology, wired and wireless traffic is analyzed and separated into multiple data streams. These streams are then categorized by sensitivity to delay, so applications like VoIP, Video Streaming, and Online Gaming are given priority over Web browsing. This enables multiple applications to stream smoothly to your TV or PC.
Advanced Network Security
The Xtreme N Gigabit Router supports the latest wireless security features to help prevent unauthorized access, be it from over a wireless network or from the Internet. Support for WEP™, WPA™, and WPA2™ standards ensure that you will be able to use the best possible encryption regardless of your client devices. In addition, this Xtreme N router utilizes Dual Active Firewalls (SPI and NAT) to prevent potential attacks from across the Internet.
Delivering best-in-class performance, network security, and coverage, the Xtreme N Gigabit Router (DIR-655) is the ideal centerpiece for your wireless network in the home or office.
Features
- Draft 802.11n Speeds Up to 14x Faster than Wireless G
- Greater Coverage for Your Entire Home or Office
- Intelligent QoS Technology for Superior VoIP and Online Gaming

| D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Gigabit Router With broadband internet being adopted in more homes each and every day, the idea of a home network becomes more enticing. As many households have more than one PC, the easiest and most popular way to share the home’s internet connection, as well as provide easy access to files on all connected PCs, is through a home network. This can be achieved through the use of a high-quality router such as the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Gigabit Router.
As simple an idea as this is, there are plenty of choices out there, each with their own slew of advantages and disadvantages. The most popular by far is the wireless network. With notebook PCs being as prevalent as they are; it only makes sense to set up a wireless home network if you are going to take the time to set one up in the first place.
The D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Gigabit Router comes. It apparently can operate up to 14 times the speed and six times the range of an equivalent wireless G product because it is a draft 802.11n compliant device. It is also compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b networks. This device also offers gigabit LAN ports to keep up with your gigabit network which basically means that the data is smoothly transferred when the data gets to the router which then sends it to other networked computers. You can also see that the DIR-655 is certified to work with Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System.
Moving onto the DIR-655 itself, the glossy white finish gives the router a classy look. The triple antennas on the back should provide a strong enough signal for almost anyone. With a single logo on the top, the DIR-655 has a clean look that should fit in almost anywhere. Along the front, there are a number of lights to signify power, activity status, internet status, WLAN, WCN (USB wireless network setup) and 4 wired port LEDs. Looking around at the back, there is a large yellow sticker covering up the ports and stating that before you connect anything to the router, the setup disk should be ran first. When removed, we see the four gigabit Ethernet ports positioned between two of the three antennas. Moving over, we get to the internet port. This is where the cable from the modem is going to go into. Beside it is a USB port. This can either be used as a print server port as well as a place to use your wireless network setup thumb drive. To the right of the USB port, there is a reset button and the power jack.
The DIR-655 includes all the latest and advanced network security features including 128-bit encryption; WEP, WPA, and WPA2 security protocols; SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) and NAT (Network Address Translation) firewalls. These security features will prevent unauthorized access over a wireless network or from the Internet.
With D-link’s Intelligent QoS technology, it prioritizes both wired and wireless Internet traffic to enable an enhanced online gaming, browsing and communication experience. It is ideal also for streaming HD video or multiple applications simultaneously.
Lightweight and sleek in design, fast and secure, the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme Gigabit Router, is indeed a cool product for everyone.

Dropping packets
Good range, good features but it seems to be dropping packets. I've reloaded factory defaults but for some reason this unit drops packets. I don't know if it is an incompatibility with my ISP but my older Cisco wireless is fine, but when I put this one on it wont complete downloads (e.g., facebook only loads some pictures...). I've put both online at the same time and can easily see the difference. I need to call support. Otherwise the range is fine, the feature set looks great but I haven't tried QoS or filtering yet, I need to get the basic operation first.

Unreliable and incredibly frustrating
When this unit works (briefly) it is fine. But look away for a moment or two and the brilliant blue LEDs will be blinking in synchrony indicating that it has failed once again. Walk on by this one because your technical support experience will also be awful. This comment relates to the Rev.B release and every firmware through 2.10NA

Great Router BUT
Doesn't work for more than 20 minutes. After that I have to restart it again and again. No Firmware updates and telephone support is a mess. Look for other routers with much better performance in this price range!

I don't recommend this product
I purchased this product on March 20,2013, it failed on June 10, 2013. It was easy to configure though I found wireless connectivity to be slow. The wireless portion failed and it took 4 phone calls, 5 technicians and 2 hours of my time on the phone for them to agree that it was defective. I have now been waiting more than 24 hrs for someone else to actually approve an exchange before I can send it back (at my cost ofcourse).
