I use NEC Dvd burners almost exclusively. Out of the 12 that I have installed recently
8 were 7170's. The 3550 was the best, they are about all gone. The 7170 is a Sony-NEC joint venture. Sony was made by Lite-on, No more. It is a very good drive. The one failure I had was quick, stopped burning on the first disk. I have tried Samsung-Toshiba (good) and the new LG Drive (I hate it). The NEC 7170 works best with 40 pin 80 connector round IDE cables. They are inexpensive, $2 or $3 usually. and they help with errors and speed everything up (16X).

This burner is definitely worth the money. It's burns all brands of discs, even the cheap no-name media. NEC is a name known for quality and this product doesn't let you down. Same model also comes in the black face sold here at Tigerdirect. I have written a review for the black face model so please see that review for a more in-depth review of these models. IN SHORT: Best burner for the average person and it can use budget discs, saving you even more $$.

Works great for the right price. I started out with a 2X NEC OEM DVD Burner and it cranked away until the avaliable media out grew it. I ordered another 16X NEC about a year ago and it works great and burns fast.
A DVD-R and
DVD+R share similarities in that they are both write-once formats, they
both have single-sided capacities of 4.7GB, they both need finalization
after recording for broad playback, and both can be used for either data
storage or video applications. The major difference is that they are not
interchangeable when it comes to recording. Because each format writes information
to its corresponding disc differently, DVD+R discs must be recorded by
a +R drive or video recorder, and DVD-R discs must be recorded by a -R drive
or video recorder. Once recorded, they share similar playback compatibility.
