Thermal Electric Cooler
A TEC (thermo-electric cooler) also known as a "Peltier Cooler," is a solid-state active heat pump capable of transferring heat from one side of the device to the other. Ultra uses a TEC sandwiched between two aluminum plates, each plate with four heat-pipes leading to a large, fan cooled radiator. Because TEC's are capable of cooling below room temperature, often condensation is a concern. But not with the Ultra Chill-TEC. The Chill-TEC's control unit does not apply power to the TEC unless the CPU reaches a certain temperature. Up to this point, the CPU is cooled by the heat-pipes on the "cold" side of the TEC. Once the CPU is hot, power is applied to the TEC and the CPU is chilled. The hot side of the TEC is cooled by the second set of heat-pipes. This perfect balance of thermo-electric cooling and heat-pipe cooling ensures the CPU is kept at the perfect operating temperature. Ideal for hardcore use, it even allows the potential for overclocking, which standard air cooling alone cannot provide.

This fan has done it's job for the years I have had it. Once it's installed it does a great job, keeps the CPU nice and cool even under heavy load, mind you it can be noisy. My biggest gripe with this fan is it's size, for this reason alone would I not buy it again. Upgrading and replacing parts becomes frustrating especially if you're using a mid tower, that and to install the fan you have to do it before installing your motherboard. I hope I'll never have to replace this fan or my CPU, because that would mean Completely disassembling my computer just to put it back together again. Not my Idea of fun.

Not so cool..
Well, I put this puppy in and it sure is noisy! Only gets my AMD945 (3.4ghz)quad down to 35C when idling. It could use better instructions for mounting to optimize air flow. Still, it sure is noisy. My model (ULT40324)does not come with the contoller.

Not happy.
I purchased this unit in December of 2008. After about one and one half years, one of the wire clips running to the controller melted down and caught fire. I was lucky to be home when this happened as I used to leave my computer running and it would have been bad if I wasn't home. I called in a support ticket to Ultra about this. After no response for a few months (I wasn't in a rush due to purchased a different cooler) I called back to see what they had determined. Since I didn't register online after purchase, I only received the 1 year warranty, not the 3 years. They denied any claim and marked it an isolated incident. I thought they might offer something more than that due to the circumstances. I don't know how to rate this product. It worked great, before catching fire. I have purchased many Ultra products, power supply, hard drive cooler, memory and fans. I will not purchase from Ultra again after this. Words of advice. Be sure to register and get the 3 year warranty.
