The IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20 is a key component in building your IBM eServer BladeCenter configuration. This blade helps take application servers to the edge of high-density design and massive scalability. At your command are powerful, two-way SMP capable PowerPC 970 2.2GHz processors with 1.1GHz Front Side Bus, high-speed memory, Gigabit Ethernet controllers, 40GB on board IDE drives, and advanced high-availability and systems management features.
With the processor speed increased to 2.2GHz, the JS20 delivers a new level of price/performance for BladeCenter enterprise customers running Linux or UNIX. Now with AIX 5L V5.2, the JS20 provides a new lower entry price for a two-way POWER-based server for UNIX commercial mainstream applications. Performance for floating point Linux applications that can take advantage of the Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) Vector Multimedia Extensions (VMX) of the PPC 970 is exceptional. Combined with the BladeCenter chassis and the HS20 and HS40 Intel processor-based blades, the JS20 helps provide a new economic approach to the deployment of large numbers of powerful servers. The investment profile of including many features in a BladeCenter chassis, which is designed to accommodate multiple generations of blades, combined with low-cost blade servers, which can be easily and inexpensively upgraded, is far superior to the investment profile of stand-alone servers for many customers. Combining different operating environments, UNIX, Linux and Windows, in a single chassis with integrated systems management tools may significantly reduce the cost of management for many customers.

The PowerPC 970 is derived from the award-winning POWER4 technology. With the processor speed increased to 2.2GHz, the JS20 is now an economical solution for file/print serving, Web serving and collaboration workloads in both Linux and UNIX environments. It is also an excellent solution for UNIX server consolidation by leveraging the integration and power saving capabilities of BladeCenter systems. Because of the price performance advantages of the JS20, it is also an excellent solution for High Performance Computing Clusters. In addition the PowerPC970 also includes 162 Single Instruction/Multiple Data (SIMD) instructions. For applications that have independent data which use the same instruction stream, SIMD instructions will allow parallel execution. These applications will typically achieve 20% to 50% greater throughput by using this instruction set than running the same application without enabling SIMD instructions.* IBM offers compilers to take advantage of the SIMD instruction set including IBM XL C/C++ Advanced Edition V7.0 for Linux and IBM XL FORTRAN Advanced Edition V9.1 for Linux. To meet increasing and rapidly changing business needs, IBM delivers modular, scale-out blade server solutions that are open, reliable and use rich security. Because the access to storage in storage area networks (SANs), network attached storage (NAS) and telecommunications networks is contained in switches in the BladeCenter chassis, customers can hot-plug new blades into open chassis slots and have immediate access to storage and networks without disrupting the infrastructure. IBM Director and CSM enable the provisioning of shared chassis options such as the CD-ROM and diskette drive to support a dynamic operating environment

BladeCenter supports 64-bit Linux, 32-bit Linux, 64-bit AIX, 32-bit AIX, and Windows operating environments in the same chassis. The JS20 blade is supported with SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 8 and 9, Red Hat Enterprise Linux v3, and AIX 5L v5.2. It uses one set of powerful management tools, including IBM Director, IBM eServer Cluster Systems Management (CSM) and a variety of IBM Tivoli Management Tools to consolidate effective management of these different environments either locally or remotely. This enables customers to consolidate management functions to improve the effectiveness of systems management and reduce management costs.
