Motor noise makes this a bad choice. Read other reviews from Amazon and judge for yourself.

PRICE AND CONVENIENCE OVER QUALITY
Pros: PRICE, PRICE, size, weight, sheer convenience.
Cons: Low light struggles, image quality.
Picked up from TigerDirect for $200 after rebate, very good price for a decent little camera.
The Good:
Very portable, fits in the palm of your hand, or in a coat pocket. Takes decent video in outdoor or bright light situations. Has some manual controls to improve video quality in lower light situations. True 16x9 CCD, built in lens cover, lightweight. Sound from onboard microphone is adequate, has jack for external mike.
The Bad:
Lower light performance is frustrating. Almost any indoor video has needed brightness and contrast adjustments in Vegas, which result in a slightly noisy picture. Optics seem well below par for a Canon product.
This is the camcorder you buy when you're taking a trip and don't want to lug around a lot of equipment. This is NOT the camcorder you want to record important events, such as weddings

I am very pleased with the results, only having had this the ZR500 for a few days. Keep in mind the price is about $200 after the rebate and the features you're getting, a good ''bang for the buck.'' I researched this camcorder for awhile before buying and was concerned about reviews describing motor noise being picked up by the high-gain mic. Listen, it's minimal to undetectable on my ZR500. You'll need to order a 4-pin(M) to 6-pin(M) Firewire cable in order to transfer video to PC ( less than $10, TigerDirect) and a several additional Li-ion batteries because the one provided only lasts for about an hour of recording time and needs to be recharged while in the ZR500 (about $10 each from bestbatt.com).

Awesome digital DV camcorder for the price. It is small enough to take with you anywhere. It will fit in one hand or a jacket pocket. Has a jack for an external microphone, most cameras don't. It does not come with any software or a CD. You will have to use your own software to transfer your movies to your computer or DVD. You will need either a video capture card or a PCI Firewire Card. I transferred the video directly to a set top DVD Recorder using the RCA output cable without any problems. I also used CyberLink DVD Solution, Power Producer, Direct to Disc with a firewire card and firewire cable (6-pin to 4-pin) to make a DVD directly on a computer and it came out perfect. It only has firewire and RCA (composite) jack for video transfer, no USB. A DV tape is not included, but they are inexpensive, 3 for $9.99 is what I paid for them. The digital zoom is almost useless, turn it off and use the optical zoom only. You can hand this camera to your grandmother, push a button, shoot
