Thiss product worked well but would not play back HD file recoerded on my PC based DVR recorded in High Defination. If I recoded the files they were ok but the process was cumbersome.

I recently bought a DSM-520 which is a good product if you don't care about sound quality. It upscale to 1080i, the playback through wi-fi works fine (even if the file is larger than 4 GB), but the problem is in the sound. I hook my DSM-520 to my Onkyo 674 (which have DTS support) and even if I rip my movie with DTS, the DSM-520 doesn't forward it to the receiver. In my case, I don't care right now about the DTS thing because the main purpose to buy it was to connect my music and pictures to my LCD and home theater without cables.

I recently bought a HDTV from Tiger and was geeked about being able to play MP3 songs on it and watch video, only problem was, I would need to copy them from my NAS drive to a USB card so I could plug them in the TV. Kind of a pain to go back and forth. So what could I do? I found this product and thought the answer to my prayers. This product in its name says ''High Definition Wireless Media Player'' Notice the word wireless. Well if you plan on running this wireless get ready to be sad, because the quality is not great on wireless. I had it on my G network and the videos would pause and skip, etc. Even the manufacter ''recommends for high quality playback'' that you use the ''wired'' option! Then why sell this as a wireless product? High DEF video will not play well with this product over wireless, you will need to have a ethernet ran to it. Who has a ethernet cable ran from one end of their house to their TV?

I up from the DSM-320 which worked as advertised, but the controls seemed somewhat klunky, ackward. and slow. DSM-520 improvements I have noticed is: much better video, softer audio, changing networks is quicker, plays more of my broad range of video formats(divx5 multipass encoded files gave the 320 unit the most trouble along with the early hacked Divx 3, XVID plays best), updates can be set to automatic, cleaner feeling interface, faster response. And setup,, 8.5 minutes from open box till video on the plasma. Moving from composite to HDMI gave an even more improved video. I use TVersity as media server on computer, also connects easily to by 2 TB Buffalo PNP media server/network storage device. One quirk I noticed is more compatability of borderline codecs if connection is via USB instead of wirelessly. Short of Popcorn or a HTPC this DSM-520 plays the broadest range of my movies. Bang for buck, Dlink got it right. Of course I would like better a remote for it. Its great....

Great product, takes less than 5 minutes set up time. don't listen to people who say it only reads one format, it has played every video format I have on my computer, I have never had a video not play on this, yes I wish it could fast forward faster, but there are limitations because I am using it over wireless, but it does ok.
