The sound quality is decent but you can definitely get better sound from a few similarly priced cards. Second sound card I got from Diamond. Also, for those of you who don't know, you can get Audacity for free so don't think that's some kind of added bonus. Good little program though. I'd recommend downloading it if you want to ease yourself into sound recording. Anyway, good card but I prefer Creative these days.
product did not function properly

problems:
1- sound stopped for 1/2 second every 4 or 5 seconds when using the toslink optical connection
2- no 7.1 when using optical connection. Sound output limited to 5.1
3- digital glitch sound produced intermitantly when using the non-digital speaker output cable jacks.
4- Diamond tech support is useless.
5- had to return the product.

This card is great..! I had bought it to connect my desktop (Windows XP SP3) to the Denon 3808CI AV receiver. I was hell bent on getting a digital feed from my songs purchased at Apples ITunes store and this was the least expensive and most effect manner. Fyi...all Ipod/Iphone docket line out connections are analog instead of digital. It was a world of difference to me. The only down side is the incorrect line (SPDIF) connection mentioned in the manual. The digital connections are the optical Toslink and NOT SPDIF..I found out the hardway after buying a SPDIF cable..! I would also recommend upgrading the driver provided (ver 1.0) to ver 2.2 available on the manufacturer's site.

From what I can tell, this card will not ''accept'' a 5.1 signal. Given a DVD or a .VOB file encoded in 5.1, it just takes it and makes its own surround mix. (The Dolby Digital Live Encoding button always worried me.) I swear my back speakers never even come on. I tried several diffent DVD's with good seperation that I was familiar with, and the sounds that I knew should be happening just weren't. However, I found the sound quality on stereo listenings very acceptable. My suggestion: not good for multichannel-encoded-media listening.

So far no big complaints. My biggest beef with the card is that it does not support 64bit Operating Systems like Windows XP x64. I had to reinstall XPSP2 to get the thing to work.

I bought this sound card for the sole purpose of connecting my pc to my Denon AVR-3808 receiver just via the optical connection. I set it to 5.1 DD and played with the effects just a bit. This sound card really brings the music to life. I've usually only heard sound this good while watching DVD's. Well worth the money.

Running this sound card in my home theater PC. Direct optical hookup to my Yamaha RXV-795. As soon as the PC boots into windows, the receiver recognizes the signal and switches to Dolby Digital. Absolutely no problems getting this to work. This also ''encodes'' to 5.1 from 2.1 sources fairly well. I did not use included drivers - go straight to c-Media's site and get the vendor drivers. Much cleaner interface and easy to use.

All I'm going to say is please don't waste your money on this card. Cracking, distortion, etc., the only good thing is the drivers are easy to load. I'm not joking, you get what you pay for. I returned it.
