Intel® Pentium® 4
Socket 775 Processor with HT Technology
Intel introduces the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with HT Technology targeted
for desktop PCs and entry-level workstations. This Pentium 4 processor features
800MHz FSB and 1MB cache in the LGA775 package. This new package is pin-less
and implements a 4 wire fan control for improved thermal acoustics. This Pentium
4 processor is designed to deliver performance across applications and usages
where end-users can truly appreciate and experience the performance. These applications
include Internet audio and streaming video, image processing, video content
creation, speech, 3D, CAD, games, multimedia, and multitasking user environments.
With Hyper-Threading Technology, desktop users can experience greater system
responsiveness and performance when multitasking. At home, users can encode
audio and video at the same time or run a virus scan in the background without
diminishing performance on their favorite game. In the office, Hyper-Threading
Technology enables IT managers to deploy PC services such as encryption, compression
or backup technologies while minimizing the impact on PC user productivity.
The Pentium 4 Processor with HT Technology delivers a new level of performance
and PC responsiveness for consumers and business professionals.
Hyper-Threading
Techonology
The Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology (Hyper-Threading) improves
processor performance and responsiveness, giving you the power to do more
tasks on your PC at once such as playing a game while encoding digital music.
This groundbreaking technology from Intel enables the processor to execute
two threads in parallel. So your you can multitask more effectively than
ever before.
Intel® Enhanced Memory 64 Technology
Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel's 32-bit architecture by enabling
the desktop processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate
64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor
supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory.
Intel EM64T provides flexibility for 32 bit now and future software that supports
64-bit computing.
Execute Disable Bit Functionality Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory by
where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm
attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution,
preventing damage or worm propagation. To provide end-to-end no execute (NX)
coverage, Intel offers Execute Disable Bit for workstations, servers, desktop
PCs and Notebook PCs.

Everyone know AMD beats the Netburst marchitecture hands down, but this review isn't going to be about whats better- just the CPU itself.
At $100, its at a very comfortable price. I've got it working on a 1066mhz bus at 4.0ghz on air cooling without a hitch. A reliable choice, if your constricted to using a Netburst processor. I would still recommend holding off any new purchases until the mainstream quad-core processors are released by Intel and AMD.

First hyperthreading CPU for me, I like how it can run two tasks at once. Can't compain with Intel, although I'm wondering if I should have gone with AMD because they are still less expensive per processing power.

Such a difference from my last CPU, this is a nice little CPU that runs very smoothly, no problems up to this point.
Heat Sinks - Many Shapes & Sizes!
A heat sink (or heatsink) is an object that absorbs and dissipates heat from
another object using thermal contact (either direct or radiant). Heat sinks
are used in a wide range of applications wherever efficient heat dissipation
is required; including for CPUs, Memory, Video Cards, and more.
Heat Sink Shapes Change!
Many products come with a Heat Sink, and some with a combination Heat Sink
and Fan. Keep in mind though, that manufacturers are constantly
improving the design of their cooling components, thus the shape and design
of the heat sink or heat sink & fan can change on any product at any time.
PLEASE NOTE:
Cooling Components Can Change At Any Time, And Do Not
Affect The Performance Or Specifications Of The Product.
How Do Heat Sinks Work?
Heat sinks function by transferring high temperature thermal energy (heat)
from one object (such as a CPU chip) to a second object (such as the Heat
Sink), which has a lower temperature, with a much greater heat capacity.
This rapid transfer of heat quickly balances the temperature of both
devices, lowering the temperature of the first. This is what makes a
heat sink a cooling device. Since room temperature is usually cooler than
the hot device, the Heat Sink helps cool the device, lowering its temp to
closer to room temperature.
The most common design of a heat sink is a metal device with many fins or
vanes. The high thermal conductivity of the metal combined with the large
surface area of the fins does the work to rapidly transfer heat to the
surrounding, cooler, air. This cools the heat sink and whatever it is in
contact with. Some Heat Sinks use the metal alone for cooling, some
use fluids (just like you car radiator) and a thermal interface material
(such as thermal gel) to ensure maximum heat transfer to the heat sink.
Adding a fan dramatically improves air flow, and improves the heat transfer
even more.
Remember The
Thermal Paste!
Remember that when you are adding a Heat Sink, you MUST USE
thermally conductive Gel or Paste, to form a good thermal contact between
the Heat Sink and the Device. Failing to use this will result in
reduced cooling, and possible failure and damage to the device!
Hyper-Threading Technology enables multi-threaded software applications to execute threads in parallel. This level of threading technology has never been seen before in a general-purpose microprocessor. Internet, e-Business, and enterprise software applications continue to put higher demands on processors. To improve performance in the past, threading was enabled in the software by splitting instructions into multiple streams so that multiple processors could act upon them. Today with Hyper-Threading Technology, processor-level threading can be utilized which offers more efficient use of processor resources for greater parallelism and improved performance on today's multi-threaded software.
Hyper-Threading Technology provides thread-level-parallelism (TLP) on each processor resulting in increased utilization of processor execution resources. As a result, resource utilization yields higher processing throughput. Hyper-Threading Technology is a form of simultaneous multi-threading technology (SMT) where multiple threads of software applications can be run simultaneously on one processor. This is achieved by duplicating the architectural state on each processor, while sharing one set of processor execution resources. Hyper-Threading Technology also delivers faster response times for multi-tasking workload environments. By allowing the processor to use on-die resources that would otherwise have been idle, Hyper-Threading Technology provides a performance boost on multi-threading and multi-tasking operations for the Intel NetBurst® microarchitecture.
This technology is largely invisible to the platform. In fact, many applications are already multi-threaded and will automatically benefit from this technology. However, multi-threaded applications take full advantage of the increased performance that Hyper-Threading Technology has to offer, allowing users to see immediate performance gains when multitasking. Today's multi-processing aware software is also compatible with Hyper-Threading Technology enabled platforms, but further performance gains can be realized by specifically tuning software for Hyper-Threading Technology. This technology complements traditional multi-processing by providing additional headroom for future software optimizations and business growth.
