This is about as much CPU muscle you can get for 599. Chews through all my h264 encodes easily. Highly recommended for those looking 6 cores way.

power of the x series at half the price

games will only use 2 of it's 12 threads if you're building a game rig buy an i5 that being said this cpu is a beast and can handle anything you can throw at it just keep it cool and you can overclock to your hearts desire i hear complaints about the price but i think it's a screaming deal it performs almost the same as 3960x (-3 megs cache 12 is still enough though)

Built a Computer for My Wife

Plenty of headroom for overclocking. It is fast and we have not even pushed the envelope. Bring up Task Manager and look at performance. It looks like 12 Cores!

excellent CPU

This CPU significantly boosted my PC performance, based on the results of the Windows Performance tests. With a water-cooled thermal management system, the CPU runs nice and cool.

OK, anyone not living under rock knows that this processor is fast, and anyone making an average income is going to look at the price and fell it is expensive. The other things: It doesn't come with a cooler. It says this right in the product description, but it bears repeating. You must provide your own cooling solution. I used a Corsair H100. Love the combination so far, but expect the temps to run high if you do any benching at higher than stock volts and multiplier. SiSoft Sandra in particular pushed my chip into the mid 70's when OC'd to 4.6GHz. If you use a water cooled option for the CPU, don't forget that you still need good case ventilation for the motherboard, power supply and any installed add-in cards. Finally, if you are looking at this for a gaming machine,while one of my CAD programs has managed to push my CPU load upwards of 25% doing a high detail render, no game so far has managed more than %15 processor load, and most show no load beyond 10%.

The better option!

Hey, if you can afford to drop a $1000+ on the i3970 or the i3990 I've heard about, then by all mean do it! BUT if you're looking for something that is more reasonably priced but still in the same league performance-wise... then this (the i3930) is what you're looking for. Right out of the box Windows7 rated its performance as a 7.8 out of 7.9.
