Liteon DVD Dual Recorder
Lite-On's LVW-5005 AllWrite DVD recorder revolutionizes the way you record your videos. It accepts all types of 5-inch recordable optical media: DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, or CD-R/-RW. It's also equipped with analog and digital video inputs and MCTF (motion-compensated temporal filtering) video noise reduction to improve the quality of your programs as you record them.
Playback features abound, including MP3 CD and JPEG digital image CD and progressive-scan video outputs to deliver seamless, razor-sharp images on high-definition and HD-ready TVs and monitors. The player is capable of writing most video formats, too, depending on the type of blank media you're using: from highly compatible DVD+VR-mode video discs (DVD-Video) to video CD and SVCD (super video CD).
A single blank recordable DVD offers up to 6 hours of recording time (in SLP mode), which is equivalent to the maximum duration of a T-120 VHS videocassette in SLP mode. Unlike your SLP tape, however, your recordable DVDs won't degrade with every viewing, and access to points within the programs is incomparably easier. Moreover, the physical size of a single VHS cassette is about 10 times larger than a DVD disc.
For all DVD recording, each new recording is always placed after previous recordings unless you intent to overwrite it (when using rewritable media). The DVD recorder can automatically divide a recording into chapters by inserting chapter marks at 2- to 15-minute intervals during recording. Editing features include title edit, title naming, title protect, title overwrite, and title erase.
One-touch recording makes it easy to record favorite programs or capture video from external sources, including composite-video, S-video, and IEEE 1394 digital video. The unit's easy-track navigator provides a directory of thumbnail images so you can quickly and easily locate chapters on your DVDs. Unique thumbnails represent segments that you can play or edit.
Before sharing your digital content with others, all discs must first go through a process known as finalization. Once a DVD+R, DVD-R/-RW, CD-R or CD-RW disc has been finalized, it can be played back on other CD or DVD players or on PCs.
The recorder's convenient front-panel DV Link (IEEE 1394) input lets you transfer footage from digital camcorders or PC audio/video programming in their original digital quality.
As a player, the LVW-5005 positions you to enjoy DVD-Video discs in NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats (depending on your media and your TV/monitor), DVD+VR (compatible with DVD-Video players in most cases), video CD, super VCD, audio CD, MP3 CD (maximum number of recognizable files: 1,000; compression rate: between 32 kbps and 320 kbps), and JPEG CD (maximum number of recognizable pictures: 1,000).
The component-video input (selectable between standard 480i and progressive-scan 480p) separates the color and brightness signals to ensure the highest picture quality. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Use one at church and own one at home. At church we burn direct from broadcast switcher for editing later. Works Great. Had issues when new but after upgrading firmware, no problems. Have one at home. Used in a Video Production company based in my basement. I have 4 SVHS recorders that I am getting ready to replace with 4 of the Liteon LW-5005's. When on site taping, I go from switcher to burner but I also take each camera to it's own burner as if the camera is live at all times. Great for back up or if you miss a shot somewhere. I love these units. For the money, you can't beat them.

This unit is a well built unit that can record on all popular recordable media with the exception of double layer and DVD-RAM. It also records on CD-R and CD-RW and can record both MP3 and CD audio discs in addition to VCD and SVCD video discs. The remote is easy to us and simple in design. The unit is also firmware upgradable and can be hacked to provide region free operation as well as Macrovision removal; however, this is illegal and I do not recommend doing this to your unit as it will void your warranty which is one year on both parts and labor; not bad as most others only have 90 days parts and labor. The unit also support 1394 4 pin mini-DV input for those that have camcorders and the unit can also control basic operations from the remote control itself. The unit is solidly constructed and has both SVHS in/out connectors and RCA type in/out connectors as well as a standard F-type RF for recording off-air and cable broadcasts.

This is a good dvd player and recorder. It is good to know that any setting other than regular record (the 2hr format) will give sub-television quality video. Setting the TV tuner on this DVD player was also very annoying as you have to individually program the tuning of each channel under a setting called ''Fine''. However, once this is set you shouldn't have to ever fix it. It would be nice if they added a volume control that could be programmed for the television. I have yet to record much media yet, but I would definately say that this is a great VCR replacement for the price.

Dear Sirs,
After a long struggle with this brand new unit LVW-5005. I have to giveup your brand. I spent way too much time trying to make your product work, with many outstanding unresolved issues. It seems to me that your technical support staffs only knows ''upgrade firmware'' or ''restore to default settings''. I suggest your management upgrade the skill set and knowledge of your support staff.
I have requested a RMA from tigerdirect, and give up your brand. I just can not afford the time and money to make your brand new unit works. I suggest the management check on the problem log that I reported on this unit.
Thank you and good bye.
Nelson Chan
What is Progressive Scan?
Progressive scanning, otherwise known as 480P (p=progressive), creates a picture signal with double the scan lines of a conventional interlaced picture, 480I (I=interlaced), to create a noticeably sharper image. The 480P image offers higher
picture resolution and eliminates virtually all motion artifacts. Even on large screens, the progressive scan lines are barely noticeable and picture flickering is greatly reduced, so you can enjoy extended viewing without eye fatigue.
In order to take advantage of a progressive scan DVD player, your TV must be capable of accepting and displaying a progressive scan signal (480p).
The Benefits of Progressive Vs. Interlaced Scanning
Standard DVD-Video players use interlaced scanning to produce a picture. Interlaced scanning combines two fields to generate a picture of 525 scan lines (480 of which are displayed). Your television projects an interlaced image by first
scanning the 240 odd-numbered lines of one field (in 1/60th of a second), followed by the 240 even-numbered lines of the other field (in 1/60th of a second). So, it takes two fields to build one frame of video.
Our progressive scan DVD players have a progressive video processor, which enables all 525 lines (480 of which are displayed) to be scanned at the exact same time; two interlaced fields are combined into one progressive frame. A television with 480P component inputs can completely scan the entire image in 1/60th of a second. The result is a smoother and sharper picture with high resolution and minimal motion artifacts.
What Is
High Definition And How Is It Different From Standard Definition?
High Definition or "HD" is a
technological leap forward from standard definition, with up to 6x the
picture resolution, so that what you see is sharper and more realistic. Regular TVs and the TV channels you watch
at home are typically in standard definition (unless you watch HD channels).
DVD are also in standard definition. Standard definition (480i & 480p)
is lower quality than high definition. Many older TV sets are standard
def, and can only show standard def content (programming). Many new
TVs are called High Definition TVs (HDTV). They are capable of showing
high def content in: 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, all high definition
formats, but 1080p provides the highest picture quality of them all. Click

How To Protect Your HDTV And Make It All
Work!
You've bought your ideal television or home
theater, but have you considered how you will protect it, or make it all
work together? It's not as complex as it might seem, but it is
important to consider, since devices may work differently, and have
incompatible modes. Plus after investing in your hardware, bad things
can happen to damage them.
MOST IMPORTANT: SURGE
PROTECTION If you have a
computer, you know all about surge suppressors and battery back-up UPS
devices. But do you have a UPS for your HDTV and Home Theater
system? HDTVs and Home Theater systems are just as susceptible to
surge and power damage as computers, so it is critical you add a very good
surge suppressor or UPS to your setup at once! Plus if you have a UPS, you'll be able to watch TV or listen to music if the power goes off! (for as long as the battery lasts of course!)
CONTROLLING IT ALL: ADVANCED
REMOTE CONTROLS Almost
every device you have came with a remote control, some even are called
Universal Remote Controls. But every device, HDTV, or Home Theater
component has special features and functions, not supported by the generic
Universal Remotes, especially if you want "One Button" control of several
devices at once. For these you need Advanced Remote Controls, that
not only control everything, but reduce it all down to One Button tasks
that even a Cave Man could operate!
GOT HELP? GET AN
INSTALLATION & SETUP SERVICE With some of
today's HDTV and Home Theater systems, you may want to consider getting
expert help from certified technicians that can quickly install your HDTV
on your wall, hide the cables and wires, balance the display settings and
the 7.1 surround sound, for the maximum in sound and picture quality.
You can still tell your friends and family that you did it, it will just be our
secret!
GET A GUARANTEED
BUYBACK FOR YOUR HDTV Another way to
protect your investment, given the changing pace of technology, is to add a
Guaranteed Buyback to your HDTV purchase. This will guaranty the
trade-in value of your HDTV a year or two in the future, when you will be
ready to upgrade to the latest technology.
