Plustek Opticbook 3600 Book Scanner
OpticBook is the most portable and affordable book-scanning solution. The product uses patent-pending SEE (Shadow Elimination Element) Technology that includes a specially designed edge and lamp. This technology allows for “zero edge” scanning which means the scanning module can scan right up to the edge of the scanner where the book spine is placed. The book can therefore be scanned with the pages completely flat on the glass to avoid the annoying book spine shadow and distorted lines of text which occur when the books is scanned on a traditional flatbed scanner.

good scanner for the money
I have had one of these for five years, and it has seen HEAVY use. The OCR probably isn't the best, but relatively speaking, it's an inexpensive book scanner. I was so please, that I bought a second one. (The light became unreliable on the first one though it's life was extended by advice from the very helpful tech support people I spoke with on the phone. Essentially, if the light doesn't light, place your fingertips at the ends of the light when it first starts up. The static electricity in your fingers can jump start the bulb. This has worked for the last 4 months for me). Considering the use I put it through, I consider the longevity of the first one to be fairly remarkable.

expensive and poor quality
I didn't mind paying that much money for a scanner however because I was paying a lot I've had more expectations than this scanner can deliver. scan quality is poor, OCR is not the latest and too many errors which is less that 75% accurate (useless feature). OCR was not automatic, and had to do it manually. interior surface of the glass is dirty and there is no way for me to clean it unless I take it apart. quality of scanned paper is poor. very disappointed

Exemplary product
Ive had this product over a month now and quite simply it delivered everything it said it would. It took a little trial and error to get it to work the way i wanted but eventually i got the hang of it. My only regret is the way the bed was designed. I would have preferred something that secured the book so it didnt slip during scanning sometimes. Otherwise i recommend this product for anyone. Especially us rpg gamers who have way to many books to tote around from place to place.

Great scanner
I've had this scanner for a month now and have scanned many books already. It works as advertised and is quite fast. The feature I like best is being able to batch scan only the area I select, whatever the dimension. Most scanners allow you to scan only pre-determided formats: you end up loosing time scanning ''blackness''. Here are some minor drawbacks: The lamp heating delay (45 sec) is a little bit annoying for it rarely, but sometimes shows up in the middle of scanning. Also, the interface will sometimes stop responding needing a power-down of the scanner (which means lamp heating delay again) and restart of the system.

This is an amazing scanner. Apart from other things I'm digitizing my reference books and this does a great job with test and pictues. Graphics give much better results than from aphoto scanner with better resolution. I don't use the included software or side buttons but have my own Abbyy Finereader and other packages. The driver CD wouldn't load but I made a copy which worked. All worked well, and it didn't need te XP patch, since I had to revert back to get it working again. Highly recommended. UPDATE: Still working fine after 3 years! A little dust got in the case but I tape over any joins in the casing to prevent further infiltrations.
